"Pimsleur programs provide plenty of positive reinforcement that will keep learners on track, and we found that Pimsleur gave us more proficiency and confidence in speaking the new language than any of the other language programs we reviewed." (AudioFile magazine)
I got this taster course for free. Unit 1 isn't all that useful by itself, as most of it is taken up by how to use the course. The course (Phase 1, if you by the other units) tends to provide a sentence, and then breaks down all the words in the sentence, and the pronunciations for the words. This is a useful intro. As it was free it was worth tasting and seeing if you could work with the Pimsleur method. If it's not free, its not that useful as a stand alone unit.
i find french more pleasing to the ear than spanish which i learnt some years ago,but being rather long in the tooth its not sinking in so fast,i like the method its gives you time to assimulate more easely.
"We are learning French the affordable audible.com"
I really like these Pimsleur lessons. Having never taken French before, it is interesting to try this and I am glad they take the words apart or I would miss some of the sounds.
Monsieur I believe. He sounds a bit stuffy?
We have only been doing the first part.
Yes. We did Unit 1 and it was just right for a cup of tea and new language.
I find these relaxing.
I was not very good at languages at school and always found it difficult. The way Pimsleur teaches you to learn French is a brilliant method that I wish my school teachers had known. They teach you through conversation and repetition at just the right moment for maximum retention and recall. It is interesting and a great way to practice speaking French out loud. I would recommend it to any beginners wanting to learn French for the first time.
Excessive repetition was almost annoying but can confidently say that I won't forget a word.
"Pimsleur Phase 1 Unit 1"
Took a college french class and no one could understand a work I said in French at the end of the class. This helped me say the words and not worry about spelling or grammar. The french have an annoying way of not pronouncing the end of most words and conjugated verbs all sound alike to me. Pimsleur just put them in sentences I could understand then reviewed them often. This worked out so well I eventually bought Phase 1, 2 and 3. Now I can actually carry on a very basic conversation and understand a fair amount of conversation in french. I did listen to each section every day and sometimes repeated the section. French does not sink into your head automatically, but if you just listen and repeat lessons each day it is pretty amazing what sticks. I did dishes, laundry, went to the market or ran errands while listening. Made boring chores more interesting and learned basic French.
"this is 1/8 of the course, why is it so expensive?"
this book is incomplete. it barely contains one complete lesson, let alone a whole books worth. i don't understand why they're charging one credit or ~15 dollars for it.
I was skeptical of the claim that this method would somehow be better than all the rest but I really did end up comprehending and retaining much more for much longer than I did in the past and the vocabulary came to mind when prompted with less effort.
"Easy to learn"
This way of teaching/learning is awesome. I have learned what I feel is great new sentences in a matter of minutes. Of course I will listen to it again to pick it up easier and faster. I feel like I learned at least 75% of what was taught to me. the most difficult thing is pronunciation with an accent. You almost have to slur. I could probably ace this if I was drunk lol.
"This is the way to learn French!"
Love it. The repetition and attention to pronunciation makes this a winner. I found it far better than the Learn French books that I bought and this one is for free!
"Suited for the true novice."
This preview is a good example of the Pimsleur method, try it to see if you like it.
"Mixed feelings about this language learning"
While I appreciated this intro, it didn't make me want to buy the full course. I was looking to brush up French from 40 years ago and this was too basic and pretty boring. That said, it is certainly an approach that works for some folks. And if I was a total novice, it might have been better.
