The content of Drive Time Japanese is ok and it covers quite a few basic speech topics in Japanese.
However if you are completely new to Japanese then I would advise staying clear of this audiobook. With very little introduction to the language at the start you are given lots of phrases to memorise without getting time to understand the correct pronunciation of the Kana syllabaries and the basics of how they work.
The second problem is gaps between being asked something and being able to respond. There is so little time that you aren't given any thinking time but simply enough time to respond if you know the answer immediately. This would make sense if the audiobook was designed to be used at home but its titled "Drive Time Japanese" and accessing the pause button every 20 seconds is not an option when you're in the car.
I would only recommend this product to people who have studied beginner level Japanese and want to have some speaking practice in the car whilst the drive. There is at least a lot of content crammed in due to the lack of gaps between phrases.
I've been trying to teach myself Japanese for a few years now, getting free or cheap second hand Japanese learning books here and there, and starting but never finishing them. Doing that worked better than you would expect. It meant that I already knew a lot of the words and expressions being used in the audiobook. I think you would probably struggle a bit if you didn't know the basics in Japanese. That said, I found the audiobook much more useful than I imagined, and it enabled me to practice what I already knew, and learn some new words in the process. I found it quite good for learning the Japanese grammar. While there is little explanation on why each words are used the way they are, I was still able to get a good feel of when and how to use them.
The only downside is that the pauses given for you to speak are a bit short, so you have to pause the audiobook to give yourself time to think and reply (not great when driving...).
I think this audiobook is only really suitable for people who already have some basic knowledge of Japanase, but just want to practice speaking it a bit more.
