Summary
Fra 1979 til 1989 deltog 1 million sovjetiske soldater i en altødelæggende krig i Afghanistan, hvor mere end 50.000 mennesker døde. Da dokumentaren Zinkdrengene første gang udkom i Sovjetunionen, blev den kaldt en "gang urigtig og æreskrænkende opspind" og del af et "historisk kor af ondsindede angreb". Gennem interviews har Svetlana Aleksijevitj givet soldaterne, sygeplejerskerne og mødrene stemme, og det er en helt anden historie end den officielle, de fortæller om krigen i Afghanistan; ubærlige og gribende vidensbyrd om krigens sande væsen og dens konsekvenser for en hel generation.
