Summary

The 30-year golden age of piracy stretched into the early 18th century. During that time, as this vividly written book by historian Matthew West shows, poverty and oppression prompted many men - and even a few women - to sea in search of treasure, adventure, and sometimes revenge.

The treasure taken in a single trip could net a captain many times the profit an average sailor might expect to gain over a lifetime. The Pirates provides an exciting glimpse into the characters, crimes, and legends created by the buccaneers.

Interesting insight,well read,worth a few dabloons

Historical and chronological, suitably salty to paint a motley picture of a glorified, and underestimated mode of an alternative 18 th century lifestyle...

Lightweight, but not bad

Nothing new, just a round up of the better known stories.
The reading is pedestrian, one gets the impression that the reader finds it all rather tedious, although some of the accents and voices he employs are amusing. I now notice, it is much better when run at a speed of x1.2
If you are prepared to overlook pirates being arrested by policemen at the start of the 18th century, it's an adequate if round up. The author seems to have had good days and bad days, some parts are noticeably better than others.
