Il termine università, nell'originaria accezione del termine, designa un preciso modello d'istruzione che ha le sue origini nelle chiese e nei conventi europei, dove, attorno all'XI secolo, iniziarono a tenersi lezioni, con letture e commento di testi filosofici e giuridici, e presso di essi, o in genere attorno a grandi personalità ecclesiastiche, varie categorie di docenti e studenti cominciarono a organizzarsi in corporazioni o universitates. Determinante fu l'opera dei monasteri e dei monaci amanuensi ma anche lo sviluppo delle città e il contatto dell'Europa con il mondo arabo. L'audiolibro esplora l'organizzazione degli studi medioevali, la nascita delle prime università italiane, in particolare quella di Bologna, i titoli di studio e gli aspetti socio-culturali che caratterizzavano le prime organizzazioni studentesche, come la goliardia con le sue poesie e i suoi canti.
