Summary

Pulitzer Prize, General Nonfiction, 1998

Guns, Germs and Steel examines the rise of civilization and the issues its development has raised throughout history.

Having done field work in New Guinea for more than 30 years, Jared Diamond presents the geographical and ecological factors that have shaped the modern world. From the viewpoint of an evolutionary biologist, he highlights the broadest movements both literal and conceptual on every continent since the Ice Age, and examines societal advances such as writing, religion, government, and technology. Diamond also dissects racial theories of global history, and the resulting work—Guns, Germs and Steel—is a major contribution to our understanding the evolution of human societies.

very informative

It starts off well, ends well enough, bit laborious in the middle. good read overall.

interesting, but lengthy

Personally, I found this book to be very interesting. It provides a answer that is simple, but not too simple to the question why some regions developed faster than others. At times however I did become a bit bored, thinking that the point the author was making was being beaten to dead. Still a great listen though.

A new perspective on History

I have throughly enjoyed this book. I found it quite heavy and complex, going into huge levels of details with numerous examples to prove Diamond’s points. However despite being heavy, it’s truly fascinating and worth while for anyone who is keen in getting a broad appreciation of the entirety of history.

Very Interesting

I found this audiobook a little repetitive at time and don’t think I would have made it through a physical copy. However, the subject matter was so interesting that I felt I had to make it through to the end. Honestly, not what I was expecting, but definitely not disappointed.

Did I miss the conclusion?

I am very split on what to make of this book. On one hand, there is a huge amount of information on the global development of mankind. On the other, I struggle to understand the authors conclusion or in fact make one of my own. Yes there are some key elements, but so much of the information feels quite disparate and the author fails to link it in a way that I found useful.

This should be compulsory reading/listening

This book is just brilliant. The only criticism I’d offer is that the narrator sometimes sounds a little hoarse, but in no way did that take away from this book.

Genius. Essential reading.

One of greatest books of our generation!

Absolutely brilliant. I loved the scientific method, the thoroughness, the rigor. He looks at things from different angles before formulating his conclusion. This is a book every one should read especially teenagers. If you are a person of color you constantly have a doubt nagging you, constantly wondering if you measure up… and this book will help a lot!
I also bought a physical copy a few years ago and read every now and then. My favorite book!

A little dry but none the less interesting.

Fascinating subjects and extremely well written, if a little dry and matter of fact with numerous lengthy moment of data readings.
Narrated well but a little flat and monotonous for my liking.
