Summary
Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Dunkirk by Hugh Sebag-Montefiore, read by Roy McMillan.
Hugh Sebag-Montefiore's Dunkirk: Fight to the Last Man tells the story of the rescue in May 1940 of British soldiers fleeing capture and defeat by the Nazis at Dunkirk.
Dunkirk was not just about what happened at sea and on the beaches. The evacuation would never have succeeded had it not been for the tenacity of the British soldiers who stayed behind to ensure they got away. Men like Sergeant Major Gus Jennings who died smothering a German stick bomb in the church at Esquelbecq in an effort to save his comrades, and Captain Marcus Ervine-Andrews VC who single-handedly held back a German attack on the Dunkirk perimeter thereby allowing the British line to form up behind him.
Told to stand and fight to the last man, these brave few battalions fought in whatever manner they could to buy precious time for the evacuation. Outnumbered and outgunned, they launched spectacular and heroic attacks time and again, despite ferocious fighting and the knowledge that for many only capture or death would end their struggle.

Exceptional narration of important history
An epic story that reveals the abject horrors of the British Expeditionary Force in Northern Europe. Very insightful. The narrator is exceptional. Possibly the best I’ve heard on Audible.

Brilliant
Great narrative flows with the small incidents and individual stories creating the very real drama and tragedy of the fall of France and the 'miracle' of Dunkirk. Wonderfully narrated

Brilliant
Well researched, exciting and enlightening as there was a lot more to Dunkirk than soldiers waiting to be saved. It gave the event a very human touch. Will definitely read more of his books, love one on Arnhem !

History at its Best
A finely crafted book which does do justice those French and English soldiers who gave their precious lives to allow the BEF to escape and thus to fight on in hope that Europe could be freed of Nazi oppression.

Dunkirk - A revelation.
This is an excellent Audio book in many ways, but especially in terms of the massive amount of information on the weeks and days leading up to the evacuation; and besides that - the gallant actions and personal sacrifices made by countless Forces and Civilian individuals and Units. Much of that is possibly still unknown to most people. The story goes a long way in making sure that those involved will not be forgotten.
It also highlights the despicable actions of SS Units and individual Commanders and troops, as in the sadistic reprisals upon Belgian civilians (including harmless women, children and the old and infirm. Not to mention the evil deeds done to British and other nation's surrendering and/or injured Troops. The SS were of course guilty of War Crimes throughout the war; and may those responsible, rot in Hell.
I must also note that there are between four to six identifiable examples of repeated passages and/or phrases. It does not spoil the book for me, but it must add up to a certain amount of 'Padding'. I'd rather see a thinner product of 100% quality, than a fatter book than necessary.
Jack D. Harrison.

Beats the film hands down
Fascinating, informative, well written and read. I would say essential reading, or listening, for anyone even remotely interested in the period.
Clearly, war can bring out the worst and the best in people but this story of so concentrated and violent turns of fortune brings it all into sharp focus.
Highly recommended.

The BEF evacuation, warts & all.
A new history of the Dunkirk evacuation and a real eye opener of the reality of the route that was every bit as much a disaster as the first day of the Somme was to the British army.
