Summary
The complete magisterial history of the greatest and most terrible event in history, from one of the finest historians of the Second World War. This shows the impact of war upon hundreds of millions of people around the world - soldiers, sailors and airmen; housewives, farm workers and children.
Reflecting Max Hastings' 35 years of research on World War II, All Hell Let Loose describes the course of events but focuses chiefly upon human experience. There are vivid descriptions of the tragedies and triumphs of a host of ordinary people, in uniform and out of it, in an 'everyman's story'.
This is now the entire audiobook, not in two parts.

Hastings at his best
Hastings takes a dispassionate view of how the Axis powers were defeated, interspersed with personal insights. He demolishes the view the British defeated the Nazi Empire, placing instead Britain's eventually brave, stubborn and resourceful stand in a world perspective with the USSRs huge, bloody, brutal and careless meat grinder effort and the US industrial might. For British readers, prepare to have a national myth or a dozen punctured. A huge overarching narration which moves expertly from the strategic to the tactical to the diplomatic and political and seasons the tale with a Lance Corporal's letter home. Brilliant, from a British patriot in Hastings, who declines to write a hagiography of the British WWII effort.

Touching personal stories, brilliant narration
Very clever way of linking all the tiny personal insights, in this story of a huge, dreadful global conflict.
Narration was very clever; superb diction, great pronunciation, and efficient use of local accents made it joy to listen to.

History in review
An enjoyable listen, marred slightly by Hastings negativity about some of the personalities which stem from his own personal dislikes. His analysis of the war is well researched and backed up with good data. For some it wil be hard to take some of the critical statements of Allied Western Countries lack of hard fighting but it is what makes this an inciteful account.

Difficult listen, brilliantly researched
excellent narration. brilliantly researched and structued. however found it difficult to follow in parts as an audiobook as there are times when statistics are read out that are too numerous to digest,. I'd read that paragraph slowly if it were a book. on the whole a very good audiobook.

Unremittingly depressing....
It really was a crap time to be alive apparently. 30 hours, 2 volumes and I think there was one solitary happy ending. To a horrible story. But as a history, it is balanced, well performed and genuinely horrifying in a way that would put off even the most jingoistic of patriots. If you can get through it, this is a great book.

Sober reappraisal of a seemingly well known story
We all grew up with WW2 stories, images , comics , plastic model kits . The B& W news reels and films are part of our folklore . But Sir Max accesses great primary sources and highlight the fundamentally brutish , wasteful and futile nature of war and disposes of much of the “ heroic” myth of Allied involvement . Great balanced view with benefit of hindsight .

How history should be told.
Stories of real individuals with concrete stats, minus national propaganda. Like adding colour to black and white.

Excellent overview of WW2
First-rate if profoundly depressing account the of most important war in history. Well worth making the effort. Many key episodes of WW2 about which I had only a hazy notion e.g. Allied campaigns in Italy 1943- are revealed in their shocking brutality and bad faith...on both sides
