Summary

Featuring a special introduction written for the audiobook edition and read by the author

A Radio 4 Book Club Selection.

A Short History of Nearly Everything is Bill Bryson's fascinating and humorous quest to understand everything that has happened from the Big Bang to the rise of civilization. He takes subjects that normally bore the pants off most of us, like geology, chemistry, and particle physics, and aims to render them comprehensible to people who have never thought they could be interested in science. In the company of some extraordinary scientists, Bill Bryson reveals the world in a way most of us have never seen it before.

Critic reviews

"To read Bryson is to travel with a memoirist gifted with wry observation and keen insight that shed new light on things we mistake for commonplace. To accompany the author as he travels with the likes of Charles Darwin on the Beagle, Albert Einstein or Isaac Newton is a trip worth taking." ( Publishers Weekly)
"Stylish [and] stunningly accurate prose....Brims with strange and amazing facts...destined to become a modern classic of science writing." ( The New York Times)

Leave out the first part

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this audiobook but I might suggest to a friend to leave out the first part as it is mostly about the start of the universe and I found the explanations incomprehensible.

What aspect of William Roberts’s performance might you have changed?

Pronunciation of non-US place names and people.

How?!

How?! In more ways than one....

Astonished by the research, wit and information crammed in this book.

It's my 4th listen and I still plan to keep coming back to this mind-bogglingly good book

great book and I learnt a lot, however a number of things I know about in very recent deal have superceded the book. It is also very long so make sure you have enough time!

A brief journey into what we think we know

Excellent narrator, especially given the, at times technical nature of the subject matter. Full of warmth and charm plus packed to the rim with knowledge. Our 13-year old son loved it.

excellent

Excellent read on human origins and lot more other things. You won't feel the change in topic lines such is the flow of the narration.

possibly the best book I have read

Having had a run of bad reads after reading the Yuval Noah Harari trilogy I was struggling to find something stimulating. How I missed this book I d not know, I read Bill Bryson many years ago when he wrote about his travels and assumed this was a similar book. How wrong I was ,.

The research that has gone in to this book is utterly astounding, where to start on such topics without baffling the reader. But this book has gripped me, educated me and not once baffled me. What an amazing read

To think that one book could make me understand the universe and the basics of Quantum Physics without once boring or baffling me is amazing. No wonder this is such a highly rated book. I cannot wait to read it again, it is that good.

It’s deep but fascinating. Man is a monster.

It can be heavy but persevere. You will learn so much, and you will conclude that man is a monster. Definitely worth a read/listen.
