Wonderful Guide to Writing Romance

This was a thoroughly enjoyable and interesting guide to writing romance. Ms Bancroft covers everything you could think of when it comes to preparing yourself to enter the world of romance novels and I learnt so many key ideas specific to the genre.

From advice on choosing the correct romance sub-genre to creating a great heroine and hero it is invaluable for aspiring writers. The way the author teaches you how to set perfect romantic outlines like the first meeting, break-up and resolution is must-read material.

The best part though is where you learn how to build sexual tension with your words and write love scenes. The author is so descriptive and helpful with her advice as she takes you through the steps.

A perfect guide to writing romance stories and an invaluable resource for writers.

Truly useful guide to writing romance

This audiobook is a thorough expose of the art of writing romance. I have written profusely (and been published) in the sphere of non-fiction and am about to embark on my first creative non-fiction story. Whilst this book is specifically about romantic fiction, many of the strategies can be usefully transferred to writing about romance in creative non-fiction, therefore, I found it useful and felt that is covered a lot of ground.

There are detailed discussions about all aspects of writing romantic fiction, from character development to creating tension between characters, writing convincing dialogue and erotic scenes. But beyond this, there are many aspects of this book that would apply to writing any fiction, as the book covers more general aspects such as scene-setting, showing not telling, creating a good beginning/end and so on.

The performance is a little 'clipped' but Dara's pronunciation is really clear and easy to listen to, which helps in digesting such a quantity of information. Regardless, I don't think this is a one sitting audio and I listened in two longish sessions with breaks.

Well worth reading if you would like to try your hand at writing romantic fiction, creative non-fiction that involves a romantic relationship, or novel writing that includes any kind of romantic development as part of the storyline.

Professional tutorial how to write romance

What made the experience of listening to Writing Romance: The Top 100 Best Strategies for Writing Romance Stories the most enjoyable?

Using a technique: “show don’t tell”. I like the example how a husband is preparing himself for celebrations of the wedding anniversary. Instead of just describe what happened, better way is to show how nervous and excited he is, what is his body language and gesture. Also shows calendar and how intense he is looking at it with important date is better than he is just write it directly.

What other book might you compare Writing Romance: The Top 100 Best Strategies for Writing Romance Stories to, and why?

"Writing Romance" is similar to "Writing fiction" and "Writing fantasy" by Blaine Hart. All three audiobooks contains tips how to organize your writing, how to be creative and full of new ideas, how to contact with publishers, what kind of techniques use to attract your readers, how to planing your writing routine and stay healthy and energetic.

Which character – as performed by Dara Rosenberg – was your favourite?

"Writing romance" doesn't t present certain characters but includes tips how to create them. Show internal and external conflicts between main characters, how it develop, what kind of emotions it involve, what motivation have characters and what they want from life. The most popular conflicts involve love, secrets, ambitious and career, money, style of life and sexual affectation. Make your conflict vivid, realistic and show how it is affect personal development of heroes. Chang of main character helps you to shape the end of the story.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, I was very engaged and curious how to write about sexual relationships in romance, what kind of language and vocabulary to use. It definitely depends of the age of your readers and their preferences Some of them prefer just gentle and symbolic language like looking into eyes, holding hands or kissing. Others enjoy more passionate and descriptive scene of sex. So if writer wants to be popular must choose exactly his audience expectations.

Any additional comments?

Very interesting is a passage about how powerful is a romance in general way and what influence it has in women’s life. Like number of divorces increases because romance s show that better to break down the bad relationships that keep it and being unhappy. Romances also portray strong, financial independent and intelligent woman, and also idealize man. It is a topic for very interesting discussion. Thank you for that.

Helpful background into writing romance

I have always enjoyed creative writing and have been looking how I could embrace that and use it potentially as more than a hobby but something that actually could earn me some money on the side. I bought this as a guide to get me started in the romance genre as it is something I am not very familiar with.
I found this provided me with good background information on the genre and pointed out things I never would have thought of.
