Our most commonly held formula for success is broken.
Conventional wisdom holds that if we work hard we will be more successful, and if we are more successful, then we'll be happy. If we can just find that great job, win that next promotion, lose those five pounds, happiness will follow. But recent discoveries in the field of positive psychology have shown that this formula is actually backward; happiness fuels success, not the other way around. When we are positive, our brains become more engaged, creative, motivated, energetic, resilient, and productive at work. This isn't just an empty mantra. This discovery has been repeatedly borne out by rigorous research in psychology and neuroscience, management studies, and the bottom lines of organisations around the globe.
In The Happiness Advantage, Shawn Achor, who spent over a decade living, researching, and lecturing at Harvard University, draws on his own research - including one of the largest studies of happiness and potential at Harvard and others at companies like UBS and KPMG - to fix this broken formula. Using stories and case studies from his work with thousands of Fortune 500 executives in 42 countries, Achor explains how we can reprogram our brains to become more positive in order to gain a competitive edge at work.
Isolating seven practical, actionable principles that have been tried and tested everywhere from classrooms to boardrooms, stretching from Argentina to Zimbabwe, he shows us how we can capitalise on the Happiness Advantage to improve our performance and maximise our potential.

"Shawn Achor is funny, self-deprecating, and devastating to my notions of what his field is all about....I'm butter to his knife." (The Boston Globe)
"Achor bases his training on a burgeoning body of research on the positive psychology movement, which emphasises instilling resiliency and positive attitudes." (The Wall Street Journal)
Really thankful to Shawn for writing and narrating this book and sharing all of his fantastic work and years of hard research with us. The principles provide practical advise for putting into practice all of the "common sense" that isn't "common action" here's to the ripple effect!
This is a powerful book. It has introduced me to the concept of positive psychology. I will try these principles in my work life and my private life. I really recommend this book
Pleased I stuck with it though, more business orientated than I'd have wanted, but I get the point about attitude being a recipe for life.
A fact filled and interesting insight into what is sure to develop into a new paradigm for individuals and businesses all over the world. Shaun brings to life the facts with great metaphors and examples.
I found out about Shawn Achor on the Abundance Factor movie, so I wanted to hear more about his research. I really enojoyed this book, I was sad when I finished listening to it.
Happy, vegetarian, swimming, Spanish learning, walking, knitting, partnered man. Teacher and learner.
This wants to be science based but isnt.
I really wanted to like it but its too wishy washy and feelgood. Took one hour then had had enough. (I am a psychology teacher, so I know what I am talking about)
He has a ten minute ted talk which says it all, now that is very funny and informative, watch that, dont buy the book. He is an entrepreneur with a science back ground not the other way round.
To set the context, I'm a British enthusiast of personal development, and very much not a happy clappy type. I've seen the power of personal development, and have moved here from more of the traditional approach within leadership and management dev.
I'm about to start listening from the start again. It's without doubt the most engaging, readily implementable, uplifting and action provoking audible book I've listened to yet. Being narrated by the author, you get the intonation, emphasis and passion at exactly where intended, and the delivery is calm, entertaining and measured.
He hits the mark on so many issues; modern day research meets historical examples with incredible advice. Simply brilliant.
Blah blah blah it's OK but basically it could have been said in a few minutes and most of it is pretty obvious. He spends a lot of time bigging himself up.
This book has already helped me a lot with my depression. It doesn't set out to do any such thing, but I found the scientifically-backed ideas for being happier and enjoying work more couldn't help but have an impact on my mood and relationships. I've just finished it and I'm going back to start it again.
"Change ur perspective to life as whole"
When my time has come and i look back at life i want to see a majority it representing happiness and love and not just anxiety, stress , and money.
Applying the approach that Shawn talks about will help me come closer to living a great , wholesome and happy life filled with loving and pleasant memories.
"Informative and an enjoyable read"
Provided some good strategies relating to Positive Psychology. With the author as narrator his passion and energy shone through and added to the total listening experience.
I also bought the Kindle version for easy reference in the future.
