If you are serious about your own recovery or indeed a professional involved in addictions, this is well worth a listen. If your personal issues are around alcohol, this is the place to start. Bear in mind some the language is from 80 years ago and personally I really enjoyed this. The narrator is passionate and whilst the quality is not state of the art digital, I think this just adds to the listeners experience.
As a recovering addict and a dyslexic I found it difficult to get into the big book in its written format. Being able to listen to it has been really helpful for my recovery and the narrator did a great job of the bringing the stories in it to life. Simple concepts made simpler by clear narratives. I listened to this in the bath and whilst driving. Now I can listen to it again and again until it really sinks in. Although some of the original text it is quite old fashioned - it still talks about a god rather than a higher power and it focuses mostly on it being men who are alcoholics ( the 'for wives' chapter was particularly frustrating) - I tried hard to see past that and see the underlying concepts it talks about. It will really help me in my recovery.
"Book is fantastic. Terrible narration."
I would recommend this book. I would NOT recommend this audio recording.
The book has been life-changing for me.
Awkward pauses that seem to occur when turning pages. Phrasing is frequently off as is pronunciation.
The book is too good to be subjected to such a bad narration.
"GREAT BOOK - BAD READER"
A better reader.
There is no comparison.
The reader is terrible, makes bad grammar & pronunciation, errors and is just terrible.
"A Must Read for Everyone"
This book has changed the lives of millions around the world, and for that reason alone everyone should listen to it. The stories of changed lives are fascinating and compelling. Unlike many novels, these stories are not embellished, and drinking is not glamorised.
This book is a sobering look at alcoholism, and at the same time takes a cold hard look at the question of "Who is God and why should I take Him seriously?"
The narrator, Glenn Langhor, is clearly no professional narrator. He makes many minor mistakes and seems to stumble through some passages. But what he lacks in professional reading ability is completely overshadowed by his earnestness. This quality in itself makes the book totally compelling listening, even if you've never had a drink in your life.
I'm really glad I listened to this book. I can now understand what alcoholics and their families have to deal with.
"A FEW SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS...."
This book gives a few simple directions on understanding and executing living in the solution.
"Narration is awful."
The narrator put emphases on the wrong phrases. I spent too time and mental energy rephrasing a sentence so it was intellible. I thought it might have been read by a computer.
The story was fine. It's almost a classic.
The reader is extremely difficult to listen to and not very fluent. He stumbles on his words and makes this important information almost impossible to absorb
"Great content and prescription to be Sober & Happy"
Many are so bound that they cannot read. Listen and meditate and do and get unbound. Sobriety and Happiness are found in this audiobook.
"The reading is not professionally produced."
The reading of this book is done by a non-professional, his style is very distracting and for me makes it almost unbearable. I go to big book study's all the time, I have rarely heard such a choppy reader. This is an important work, the narration should have been done by a professional.
"Very helpful. AA is saving my life and family!"
Very helpful. AA is saving my life and family! I recommend this book to everyone who thinks he/she has a problem with alcohol and wants to take the next step on taking care of the problem.
"Practice before you perform"
The content of the book has changed my life ! Thank GOD it wasn't as staccato as Glenn's reading. Sentences lose their meaning when not read fluently. Great book... narrator not at all.
