Primal Endurance shakes up the status quo and challenges the overly stressful, ineffective conventional approach to endurance training. While marathons and triathlons are wildly popular and bring much gratification and camaraderie to the participants, the majority of athletes are too slow, continually tired, and carry too much body fat respective to the time they devote to training. The prevailing "chronic cardio" approach promotes carbohydrate dependency, overly stressful lifestyle patterns, and ultimately burnout.
Mark Sisson, author of the 2009 best seller, The Primal Blueprint, and de-facto leader of the primal/paleo lifestyle movement, expertly applies primal lifestyle principles to the unique challenge of endurance training and racing. Unlike the many instant and self-anointed experts who have descended upon the endurance scene in recent years, Sisson and his co-author/business partner, Brad Kearns, boast a rich history in endurance sports. Sisson has a 2:18 marathon and fourth-place Hawaii Ironman finish to his credit, has spearheaded triathlon's global anti-doping program for the International Triathlon Union, and has coached/advised leading professional athletes, including Olympic triathlon gold and silver medalist Simon Whitfield and Tour de France cyclist Dave Zabriskie. Under Sisson's guidance, Kearns won multiple national championships in duathlon and triathlon, and rose to a number-three world triathlon ranking in 1991.
Primal Endurance applies an all-encompassing approach to endurance training that includes primal-aligned eating to escape carbohydrate dependency and enhance fat metabolism, building an aerobic base with comfortably paced workouts, strategically introducing high-intensity strength and sprint workouts, emphasizing rest, recovery, and an annual periodization, and finally cultivating an intuitive approach to training instead of the usual robotic approach of fixed weekly workout schedules.

This is an excellent book, a few weeks into changing my lifestyle and eating habits I have much more energy, less aches and pains and my endurance is rocketing upwards. I often find fitness books quite hard to sit down and read cover to cover, but having this as an audiobook (excellently narrated by Brad Kearns) has enabled me to listen to it a couple of times already. There is so much to take from this book for both beginners and elite runners, thank you Mark and Brad.
The narrator was good but I found the text quite patronising and basic in places. There are some gems in there though so overall worth the read.
easy listening and very light hearted with an honest approach to the chronic cardio trainers. Loved that what these guys advocate is what they have lived. Awesome read the for anyone looking to step up there game.
I loved this book and worked through it in a few days. Brad's narration was great and I found it entertaining. The first chapter summarising the book is really helpful for reviewing. Exercise recommendations around staying below aerobic threshold, periodisation and sprinting were all excellent. Still unsure about MSP strength training. There seems to be very little out there on this lifting routine to validate it yet but I'll incorporate it into my workouts and see how it goes.
The chapters on diet exceptional as always. I've lost stones of weight following low carb high fat. The science is legit.
The only negative point about the audiobook which is why I didn't give it 5 stars overall was that there is no accompanying PDF. Some of the schedules, diagrams and especially the warm up exercises need to be included as a separate PDF. If that changes then I'll give it the full 5 stars.
Been doing this for 2 and a half months and I've lost 30 pounds, and I've never had do much energy! I've not felt like I was on a diet a day of it and I feel better in most ways than when I've been fit before, more energy, sharper mind, no little strains on my body. I'm working my way back down from 290 pounds so my fitness won't be where it was until I'm a bit lower but whenever I've done other diets, training regime's, it's felt like a slog and only will power would get me there, but I have enjoyed every minute of this and can't recommend it enough!
I found this book interesting to listen to however there was very little practical guidance that would easily allow me to put the principles in place in my own life.
All types of people can take something from this, though if you don't keep fit at all, then you will get bored but you probably wouldn't read it in the first place. However the more seriously you train the better for you it will be!
"Wish it had a PDF included."
Good book but missing the Graphical representation it mentions repeatedly. Honestly it should be a no brainier that if I purchase the audio book or PDF it should be a combo buy if graphics are always mentioned. There are many solutions to this problem like. Just provide the Charts and tables mentioned only. Or host the PDF charts and tables online. Another solution combo the PDF and audio book together if the author insist on referring the charts and tables repeatedly. I almost purchased the 21 day plan from audible but glad I did not since many reviews stated that it referred so much to graphics that the audiobook was a huge waste of time and money since the book cannot stand on its on in audio. To me that's a big fail. Audio is the least resistance path to gaining the knowledge in a book based off time and reading level. It should have a bigger audience at least for fiction. Non fiction should not be hindering this by providing an incomplete version of the authors work. Especially if the price is basically the same. Perhaps I will start an audible spinoff that addresses this issue. If I can do just that better perhaps I too can become like Mark Cuban.
Yes, loaded with tons of useful information.
Possibly "Grain Brain" or "Keto Clarity" it seems to provide revolutionary information that just isn't mainstream yet.
Its a long book and he makes it very entertaining to listen to!
I thought the information was incredible.
This book absolutely needs PDF. There is so much information in there and would make it so much easier to follow after you finish. Please get this done! Otherwise great book!
"A very different way of training!"
This book challenges the traditional thinking of endurance that it's all about the miles and to push through the pain. Perfect for an aging athlete like myself.
"Good information but drags on and on and on"
NO...I believe the print would bet better.
Anything not so draining.
Nice voice but after the constant repeats became annoying.
The information regarding running and heart rate was very informative.
I am a tell me once and I get it type of person. This book was too wordy and everything was repeated to such a level I felt I caught myself rolling my eyes. "Not again...."
There's so much totally sensible information in this book that it demands a second listen - this HAS to be legit - sugar and grains have always made me feel bad - like a hangover the next day - as an endurance junkie, this is my new roadmap.
"great for all athletes not just endurance athletes"
shows important of balancing life and training stress in addition to how to be more aerobically efficient. good read.
"An informative and fun read."
Just finished the book and especially the final three or four chapters were just steeped in pertinent info. Love that the co author narrated, he's got a very passionate and upbeat way and that made me want to keep listening through something like 13 hours!!!!
Sisson once again explains a method of fitness and nutrition that totally makes sense. Our bodies are not designed to constantly throw kindling on the fire. Wouldn't you rather slowly burn that big log for all your energy needs? Excellent resource. Thanks again Mark.
"The Bible of Health!"
Thank you so much for saving me years of work looking for all this information. I actually clapped at the conclusion. This book could save so many from themselves.
"Enjoyable, Practical and Eye opening"
It changed the way I view training, very practical and motivating holistic approach. The author is super fun, the best voice and rithm of lecturing, great storyteller. I will listen to it again to gain more out of it. I am a soccer coach and I am thinking how to implement the principles from the book in my player's life. Even I asked my teenage daughter to listen to the chapter about sleeing. It has a evolutionists world view, but the observations made were good, also the idea of returning to our natural style of training, it can be applied also in the creationist model world view. A book worth listening, you wont get bored at all, still detailed parts were necessary for scientific references. Great fun of it. Good job guys!
