Summary

Pain, suffering, and stress can be intolerable - but it doesn't have to be this way. Mindfulness for Health reveals a set of simple practices that you can incorporate into daily life to relieve chronic pain, suffering and stress. Clinical trials show that mindfulness meditation is at least as effective as the most commonly prescribed painkillers and can be more powerful than morphine. Mindfulness can also significantly reduce the anxiety, depression, irritability, exhaustion and insomnia that can arise from chronic pain and illness.

Mindfulness for Health is based on a unique meditation programme developed by Vidyamala Burch to help her cope with the severe pain of a spinal injury. The Breathworks Centre founded by Vidyamala - and its affiliates around the world - have helped thousands of people cope with pain, illness and stress. Its pioneering approach is praised by Professor Mark Williams of Oxford University, Jon Kabat Zinn, and Professor Lance McCraken of King's College London. The eight week programme at the heart of this book takes just 10-20 minutes per day. You'll be surprised by how quickly your suffering melts away, leaving behind a deep-seated love of life. This title includes eight guided meditations which appear throughout the audio, as well as being collected at the end.

INCREDIBLE

Would you listen to Mindfulness for Health again? Why?

I'm going to soon, I got so much out of it the first time and am sure the second will reaffirm the inner peace and warmth this book helped me find.

Any additional comments?

An amazing start to a journey into mindfulness for me, and a book that a plan to return to many times whenever in need of a little guidance. I'd recommend this to anyone suffering from pain, mental, physical or both. Well written, in a way other self help books aren't, this one really doesn't make you feel to blame. Gives you knowledge and techniques, and guides you in how to apply them.

This makes a difference

I recommend this book for reconnecting with your body and understanding pain and how to deal with it. It has made a huge difference to me. I am now very attached to the narration - I have a Pavlovian response to the sound of Viridyana's voice as it has been so effective. The only criticism I had was that there was no summary of what to do each week but after feeding back to Breathworks and the publisher, this information has now been added to the Breathworks site. I have been recommending this book a lot.

Why no chapter titles?

Whyyy would you go through all the effort and expense of producing an audiobook, only to fail to label the chapters at the end? This is a practical guide, many of the chapters are just guided meditations, yet they're labelled as nothing but 1 2 3 4 etc...
This book would be 1000x more usable if the chapters were properly labelled!!!

a new peace of mind

I have always found engaging with meditation very difficult. I misunderstood the process as 'not thinking' and was frustrated.

This book calmly explains the working process of mindfulness to the rational mind before leading you gently into the practice. I began using this at a difficult time and it has helped a lot, mindfulness is still a daily practice and is putting me more in touch with my body and helping me gradually get a perspective on my mind.

I recommend it.
