Does your dog really love you? Or, like many owners, is your dog only your best friend when you are cuddling on the couch? When you step outside your front door, is he more interested in every passing dog, bird or half-eaten bag of chips that you come across?
Does the mere thought of letting your dog off lead get your heart racing with panic?
Well that's how I used to feel, until I discovered how to control - and train - my dog using play. Now I enjoy stress-free walks wherever I take him.
I couldn't find a book that would help, so I wrote this one so that you can discover it too.
When you have finished this book, you will know:
This is a complete, no BS guide to how I went from hapless dog walker to successful trainer.
I promise this book will give you the roadmap and confidence you need to train your own dog and have him following you around the park like the Pied Piper, in just six weeks!

My very first dog was an easy-peasy Border Terrier who just happily blended in with our family. It never even occurred to me to read a book on dog behaviour. I actually had no idea just how ignorant I really was about dogs until I came home with my very first 10 month old Australian Cattle Dog! She had well established dog-aggression issues in ANY location and was so territorial that this also extended to people who weren't part of her pack who came into our home or near our car! Suddenly I needed expert help!
I've spent hundreds of pounds on one-off consultations with expert behaviourists, I've read many excellent books specifically targeted at treating dog aggression, but there was a major gap between the point I was at and the place I needed to be in order to fully understand and implement what was in these books with confidence and accuracy. I needed a lot of hand-holding. I feel that in the 5 years that I've been reading and learning I have come a hell of a long way, but there has been an awful lot of trial and error involved along with the book learning much of which could have been avoided if I'd just been able to start with this book and build from there.
What I feel is so great about this book is that it starts with the basics. It doesn't assume you are already there (which let's face it, most of us really aren't). It gives you an insight into the way our dogs view the world and how to get that working to our advantage. How to avoid an awful lot of the pitfalls that we ignorantly fall into and that ultimately make our job that much harder going forward and how to build a solid relationship with our dogs based on what our dogs actually want and value and not what we assume they should want, but often don't. The tips and exercises in this book will really help you get to know your dog and build a rock-solid relationship with him along with a good grounding of the basic commands.
Having learned a lot the hard way I found myself nodding my head vigorously all the way through as Dom highlighted classic mistakes we've all made and key bits of wisdom which I couldn't agree with more. I also had several light bulb moments which I will take away. I must just emphasise again that I only wish this book had been around when I needed it. It's a book that really holds your hand!
I've read a lot of dog training books lately and this one is a real stand out.
Practical, helpful, simple to implement advice, with a tongue in cheek manner that is very easy to read or listen to. It doesn't just tell you what to do, but includes a program of when and where to do it. A true gem!
A lot of dog training books recycle the same methodologies, styles and attitudes - this one is refreshingly different. I will be buying copies of this book for my friends. Everyone who has a dog with "issues" should read it!
A good and educational book, just don't give it to a child to listen to.
Entertaining and enlightening. I've read my fair share of dog books , in fact some would say I'm becoming an addict . I enjoy the sciencey ones and others . This book is refreshing and easy to listen too . It's positive reinforcement based , though not full of language you have to google to check what it means . It's straight forward and sensible . Dom's narration is entertaining , the information and ideas in it , practical and useful . The book is now on my Christmas list , and I only buy the ones I've really enjoyed - useful to reread and make notes in . It's a winner in my view .
I was already doing some of the things in this book, but have taken things to the next level and my dog bloody loves it. even after a couple of days of playing more and using her meals and training time, she is exhausted.
However my dogs main problem is when dogs come up to her, and there is no advice to tackle this. So we just try to avoid other dogs, which isn't always easy!
Finally, a book written with Dog Owners in mind.
This book is a simple how to which will help dog owners live a happier, easier and more fun filled life with their dogs.
All too often books are written with the intention of helping dog owners, but they inevitably turn into a 100 pages of science and complicated scenarios which seem to be more aimed at other dog trainers than owners.
Dom has managed to cram this book with simple actionable steps that any dog owners can start using before they've even finished the book.
If your dog pulls, barks, runs away, doesn't come back...
If you're frustrated, embarrassed and annoyed because of your dog...
If you don't know what to do to solve your dogs problems and find all of the science too confusing...
Then get this book and do as Dom tells you.
It's simple and it's effective.
Cracking book mate.
Dominic's book is a good introduction to dog training for those that are new to having and/or training dogs. The book is presented in a way that is humorous and therefore easy to read. I read a previous bad review regarding the swearing. For me the swearing was one of the highlights, it kept me entertained and made Dom very relatable. I like the audiobook for that reason. Dominic's character comes out along with his 'Dad Humour' which I love.
I didn't agree with some of the points that Dominic makes and as such I can't give it a 5 star. Although I appreciate opinions will always differ. The main issue I disagreed with was the emphasis on preventing your dog playing with other dogs (they should play with you instead). Whilst I agree with this to some degree I think sometimes Dominic took it a bit too far and I would worry that it could result in an under-socialised dog and all of the problems that come with that. I don't want to reveal too much of the book but there were a few other points that I found myself disagreeing with.
The book is certainly an enjoyable read and I have already found myself recommend it to a client. Dominic has made dog training very accessible for those that might of otherwise been put off by the more laborious style of other books in the genre and for that he should be commended.

Finding the kryptonite .... OMG once you know these and how to use them they really do work
Tom & Jerry
First time I've ever had an audio book and loved it .... being able to read a book without having to find my reading glasses, listening to it in the car and doing my house work and ironing at the same time was great, plus I got to finish the book in quick time so I could put all I learnt from the book into practice!!
This is the most down to earth and easily understood training guide I have ever read. Dom Hodgson's narration is both clear and entertaining. If you own a dog then this is the guide for you!
I rate this book very highly over other audiobooks
If you want to build a good relationship with your dog, this really is a fantastic book. Dom takes you back through all the basics, but helps you to see it from a slightly different viewpoint than you were perhaps taught at puppy class or read in your early puppy books. He does it with such a lovely style of humour you can't help but snort or chuckle out loud. It is a refreshing change to many books that feel the need to pack them full of scientific terms, of which I have read 100's. The approach is simple, clear and above all else FUN! If you embrace the book how it is intended, really have a go, I don't think there are any bad habits you couldn't correct. What has really struck me is my blood pressure has dropped, walks are less stressful, I am having more fun with my dogs and they are a joy to be with and I think they are a whole lot happier. If you want to have a better relationship with your dog and be his/her superhero then whatever you spend on this book is money well spent in my humble opinion. I can't wait to reread the book and do more.TTFN off to go and find some more Kryptonite and BMFI!
