This is an InstaRead Summary of Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead by Brene Brown.

Below is a preview of the earlier sections of the summary:

What It Means to Dare Greatly

The author has always been inspired by Theodore Roosevelt's speech, "Citizenship in a Republic";. The speech spoke of vulnerability and of trying, even if success is not guaranteed. To the author, this speech is about the reward of trying, not about winning or losing. It is for this reason that the author chose the phrase "Daring Greatly"; for the title of this book.

Introduction: My Adventures in the Arena

The author is a social worker who specializes in research. She has previously done extensive research and writing on the topics of shame and living a Wholehearted life, a life filled with courage, engagement, and purpose. In doing this research, the author recognized problems in her own life that prevented her from following her own advice. One of these problems was a fear of being vulnerable. It reached a critical point in 2010 when the author was asked to speak at TEDxHouston, an independently organized event modeled after TED (Technology, Entertainment, and Design), a nonprofit organization devoted to "Ideas Worth Spreading."; The author gave a speech in which she opened up about her personal life and allowed the audience to interact freely with her. She was surprised by the response she received at the event, and later when her speech was placed on the main TED website. This led to the author making many speeches about vulnerability, and those speeches became this book.

    "unemotional reading"
If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

If you’ve listened to books by Brene Brown and Instaread Summaries before, how does this one compare?

Brene Brown is animated, 'causal' and friendly to listen to. This summary really didn't do her work justice.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Kind of monotone reading, sounded really clinical or like a satnav

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Someone who is curious about whether or not the actual book would be helpful

Has Daring Greatly turned you off from other books in this genre?

This summary has helped me not buy summaries if I don't need to but not turned me off.

What aspect of Danica Greer’s performance would you have changed?

I thought her performance was appropriate but not Brene Brown.

    Any additional comments?

Don't buy this--buy the book. More significantly, buy books that Brene is the narrator. Thanks

"Why waste time and money on a summary?"
What disappointed you about Daring Greatly?

Do yourself a favor and please listen to a sample before purchasing.

I love Brene Brown's books. I was not familiar with the concept of an Instaread summary. I am sorry I wasted my money on this, I did not read the description carefully enough in my haste to stock up before a long car trip. My bad. I cannot think of a reason why anyone would want to listen to this instead of the book. I don't get it. Who is the intended audience? I found every part of this the purchase irritating, the narration, the third person style of writing, the recorded in a subway bathroom sound, and the shame of having made a poor choice. :) To be fair my wife and I could only stand to listen to 10 minutes, which is 1/4 of the total time. Perhaps there is some nugget of value by the the end that I will never hear.

If you do purchase it after reading this please enlighten me with a comment explaining why you find this valuable. I read more reviews before posting this and am stunned at the 5 star reviews. They did not answer my simple question. Why?

How did the narrator detract from the book?

the reader is overly nasal and the slight echo and upper frequency EQ boost do not help.

    Any additional comments?

I would ask for my money back, but it was my mistake.

    "Too short!"

The summary left me confused. For Brene' Brown, that's good because I'm likely to buy the full version. For Instaread not so good because I won't buy another. The clipped reading style of the narrator did not do justice to Brene' Brown's warm, familiar and therefore comforting writing style. My opinion: save yourself $4 and go for the full version from the start.

"I thought this was the real book. It isn't."
Would you try another book from Brene Brown and Instaread Summaries and/or Danica Greer?

    Yes,

What was most disappointing about Brene Brown and Instaread Summaries ’s story?

This is NOT the book, it is a 30 minute review. I bought this on my phone and didn't see the TINY letters saying that is was a REVIEW. RIP OFF.

What didn’t you like about Danica Greer’s performance?

DIDN'T LISTEN once I learned it was a REVIEW.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    NO. IT IS A REVIEW.

    Any additional comments?

NEED to list this as a review, not a book. Has no place with her other books.

    "Good summary, bad narrator"

I couldn't get past the first few minutes because the narrator is so shrill. Dissapointed by the delivery, not the message.

    "Just get the full book"

This summary doesn't do the actual book justice. I don't think the summary is thorough enough. The narrator is not my favorite. She has good diction and delivery of her points, but an unappealing (to me) childish voice.

    "Overview of Daring Greatly"

I have watched Ms Brown on YouTube and find her work/research to be helpful in understanding my reactions to certain situations.

This is an interesting presentation for developing sales. Did it influence my decision about the purchase of the book? No, but I'm more inclined to purchase the book once I finish other reads.

    "Buy the book!!"

I understand the reason for this summary, but not worth the money - not capturing the book's content. Buy the book - if you allow it it is life changing. Definitely not paying for summaries again
