Great in so many ways but annoying in the equal number. This book is as much about motivation as it is about technical ability. I suppose I was more in the mood for informative content than 'being energised'. Some useful techniques are not covered to a sufficient degree like the PEP. Instead I found too much focus on stories about the successes of the author. The science behind his ideas is based on anecdotes of what has worked for him rather than independent research. I wish I could give it more stars as elements of it are interesting but on the balance, too many elements were disappointing. My scoring reflects the value for money I felt I got.
"A Very Useful Book"
This book is full usable tips on how to achieve greater clarity in our writing and in our spoken words. The author supports his tips with many examples. These serve to clarify and make more clear the points that he is making. I liked the tip about only including three or four points when delivering a lecture or writing about an essay on a topic. He also alludes to the need for avoiding jargon and of instead using the simpler words when you can.
I also thought that it was very insightful of him to encourage the use of cliches if they can help convey the point one is trying to make. They are too often made pariahs when they can serve a useful role inn communicating our ideas and thoughts. There are many other tips as well. In summary, this book can make you a better communicator.
"Largely Sales-Oriented, and Instantly Usable"
It doesn't tell you up front, but as the tips and tricks are offered and situations are examined, the usable information here becomes oriented towards sales. The idea is that everyone likes to buy, and nobody likes to be sold. Everything in this book is simple, effective, and easily usable, and you get better with practice, but the direct applications in the sales world for me was an unexpected bonus. The means to provide customer service, defuse hostility, and secure future sales most definitely offers a broader application outside of the sales world. Goodman's approaches to communication are timeless and can help you come across as effortless in using them if you're willing to commit.
This author had a lot of real world advice that i could apply in my own life. I plan to go back to parts of this book and review his advice.
This is just the book I needed to hear! It is a well thought out and written book for anyone who needs to communicate better.
"Will listen to it again"
Great book. I liked the subject and narrator. I would recommend it for anyone who would build more communication skills.
