Publisher's Summary

"Bittersweet is the idea that in all things there is both something broken and something beautiful, that there is a moment of lightness on even the darkest of nights, a shadow of hope in every heartbreak, and that rejoicing is no less rich even when it contains a splinter of sadness. It's the practice of believing that we really do need both the bitter and the sweet, and that a life of nothing but sweetness rots both your teeth and your soul. Bitter is what makes us strong, what forces us to push through, what helps us earn the lines on our faces and the calluses on our hands."

In this follow-up book to Cold Tangerines, author Shauna Niequist shifts her gaze to the challenges and blessings of change in Bittersweet. Drawing from her own experiences in a recent season of pain and chaos, she explores the bits of wisdom and growth we earn the hard way, through change, loss, and transition, and offers her own reflections on what brought her hope along the way.

    "Sweet sucker punch"

Having just discovered the Relevant podcast last summer I was accustomed to a different side of Shauna. Sure, the title clearly tells you that this isn't light reading. But having been well acquainted with the level of 'bitter', or pain, that she addresses I am once again blessed by the wisdom and tenderness of her voice to our generation. There is beauty in each struggle and this book is a wonderful testament to that.

    "Life changer"

Shauna has an amazing way with words. She helps you see things in a way you've never seen them before. Her words paint a clear and vivid picture and grasp your heart. Her raw honesty and real-ness is so refreshing and inspirational. I can only hope she continues to bless us with her words and stories from her life. My life is changed from having read her book.

"I want to listen to it again!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I'd highly recommend this audiobook/book to friends & family. In fact, I already have two people in mind that I'm going to gift this book to.

What does Shauna Niequist bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

As I've gotten into the world of audiobooks, for non-fiction/personal books in particular, I've found it makes ALL the difference in the world to have the author read her/his own book. I love hearing Shauna's voice tell her own stories. Other books have been ruined for me when it's someone else's voice telling the author's story-- it is clearly ungenuine-sounding in most of those cases. Not so with Shauna telling her own stories... so good!! So real!!

    Any additional comments?

I loved this book from start to finish, and was captivated by her stories. Her stories are meaningful, deep, very relatable (even her stories about her marriage, although I'm not married-- I could understand because of the way she tells it). Not only that, but the book is inspiring in a way that makes you (me) want to jump back on some trains in life and faith that I've fallen off of. I plan to listen a second time through sometime, because there are so many nuggets of wisdom scattered throughout.

"The Book Title Says It All"

I really looked forward to listening to this book. The first attempt to listen to the story was not at all what I had expected based on the reviews and my friends' comments about the author's other book. I thought perhaps experiencing and enjoying this book would be for another season. Fast forward to this week. After trying to listen this time, the story and content seems like I am simply reading someone's personal journal without any benefit for personal interaction. It feels as if I cannot connect because the stories are not meant for me. They seem self indulgent rather than helpful or engaging. I rarely write reviews, but I am disappointed in this trend of just publishing a journal without a purpose or message to engage the reader.

"Not as good as present over perfect"

I LOVED Shauna Niequist's book, Present Over Perfect---and was anxious to have more of it, so I got this one. It's self-indulgent and a bragadocious memoir, with moments of loveliness and humor. I don't really know what it's supposed to be, or say. But whatever it is, I didn't get it.

    "Beautiful"

I love how raw Shauna is in her writing. This book is a collection of beautiful, colorful essays strung together as one. I feel as if I have known Shauna forever and I experienced each emotion of this bittersweet life with her. I love that she read her own book. This is the first book of hers I have read and I am a fan! I plan to read or listen to them all! Love love love this book!

    "Not a guy book"

Your wife or girlfriend might love it but this wasn't my cup of tea, not really a guy book. I love Donald Miller, Bob Geoff, and Andy Andrew's and this book as recommended from my recent purchases, normally audible recommendations are great but this one didn't work for me.
