Publisher's Summary

John Wyndham's classic tale of monsters from the deep, alien invasion, and ecological disaster comes alive in this full-cast BBC radio dramatisation.

At first, the fireballs seemed to be nothing more than a dazzling display of lights in the sky, plunging into the deepest oceans and disappearing without trace. But when ships started sinking inexplicably and the sea-lanes became impassable, it seemed that the world was facing a threat of unprecedented proportions.

What the Critics Say

"A shower of flaming meteorites disappears into the sea to re-emerge in horrific form, sucking down ships, attacking coastal towns and changing the direction of ocean currents so that the poles melt and the world begins to flood." (The Times)

    "Wasn't sure ... but wow!"

I wasn't sure what to expect with a 'dramatised' version of one of my favourite books by one of my favourite authors. Sure it was the BBC but...

I sure didn't want something that detracted from what I had already imagined. I usually buy unabridged and undramatised versions.

All I can conclude is wow.

Well done to the cast, writers, sound engineers and producers/directors. Thank you for sticking to the story, themes and atmosphere of the original.

I have added the rest of the set to my wishlist.

    "to many corners cut."

I preferred the Canadian version broadcast from vancouver. ( free on Librivox) more detail, more focus on key events in the narrative and played with far more creativity and emotion.

    disappointed with this rendition.

    "Incessant pillow talk smothers story"

Interesting story marred by incessant pillow talk and glib reporters. When it's the end of the world from an alien invasion you would think that people would act differently.

    "Old Time Sci Fi"

I did not like it very much. It was stylized like an old radio show, but it just did not translate well that way. And it developed slow.

    "Kraken Wakes Appalling Dramatisation"

What a disappointment. Hopefully the writer of this dreadful dramatisation went on to a different career. The story is almost unrecognizable. Wyndham must be turning in his grave.
