Summary

A dynamic remastering of the original BBC Radio 4 full-cast serial - Fit the First to Fit the Sixth - which spawned a phenomenal hitchhiking legend.

The original series of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, remastered by Dirk Maggs (director of the Tertiary, Quandary and Quintessential Phases) to give a full, vibrant sound, now with Philip Pope’s version of the familiar theme tune and specially re-recorded announcements by John Marsh.

Join Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect, Trillian, Zaphod Beeblebrox and Marvin the Paranoid Android in their first series of adventures as they witness the destruction of Earth to make way for a hyperspace bypass, stumble upon the ancient planet of Magrathea, dine at the Restaurant at the End of the Universe and seek an answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe and everything.

Peter Jones, Simon Jones, Geoffrey McGivern, Mark Wing-Davey, Susan Sheridan, Stephen Moore and a full supporting cast star in these BBC Radio 4 episodes.

A special 55-minute bonus programme, Douglas Adams's Guide to the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, explores the genesis of the radio series and its incredible success, with contributions from the original cast and production team.

Audio files were replaced in April 2021.

very good listen

Would you listen to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy again? Why?

Draws you in and takes you on the adventure. The full cast makes it feel more like an audio play but well worth the listen.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy?

The link to the next book.

What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

The mixture of voices brings a new depth of imagination.

Sandwich days

I love this book. I love the radio show. I love the tv series. There is nothing about this story I do not like. I might be a tiny bit biased , but you've got to admit, it's brilliant. Buy it. You'll love it.

THHGTTG - The Tertiary Phase

This was very reasonably priced on Audible. It's the fully-dramatised recording of the first radio series. It's an excellent listen, plus there are some added extras. Recommended!

everyone should discover Hitchhikers

Hitchhikers is one of those things that everyone should try. Like a fine wine it ripens with age, yet unlike the former vintage, you'll be delighted to have your sides in stitches

Classic

Absolute classic and it is still as good today as it was in the 80’s.

One of the best

I used to listen to this every day on cassette as a child. It’s lost none of its charm, wit and ability to make me laugh. The cast is spot on and the theme song is iconic!

Everyone should download this

I had the first two phases on CD so was glad of the opportunity to upgrade at a fair price, as a member of Audible. This audiobook is one of the best works the BBC has published, hilariously witty and amusing. I would recommend to anyone who listens to Radio 4.
