Summary

Shortlisted for the British Book Awards, Biography of the Year, 2007.

Is it possible for humans to discover the key to happiness through a larger than life, bad-boy dog? Just ask the Grogans.
The New York Times bestseller, with over 2 million copies of the book in print, read by the author.
John and Jenny were just beginning their life together. They were young and in love, with a perfect little house and not a care in the world. Then they brought home Marley, a wiggly yellow fur ball of a puppy. Life would never be the same. Marley quickly grew into a barrelling, ninety-seven pound steamroller of a Labrador retriever, a dog like no other. He crashed through screen doors, gouged through drywall, flung drool on guests, stole women¿s undergarments, and ate nearly everything he could get his mouth around, including couches and fine jewellery.
Obedience school did no good ¿ Marley was expelled. And yet Marley¿s heart was pure. Just as he joyfully refused any limits on his behaviour, his love and loyalty were boundless, too. Marley shared the couple¿s joy at their first pregnancy, and their heartbreak over the miscarriage. He was there when babies finally arrived and when the screams of a seventeen-year-old stabbing victim pierced the night. Unconditional love, they would learn, comes in many forms. The heartwarming and unforgettable story of a family in the making and the wondrously neurotic dog who taught them what really matters in life. For lovers of Tuesdays with Morrie, The Year of Magical Thinking, and even, of course, dogs!

Critic reviews

"A book with intense appeal...tenderly follows its subject from sunrise to sunset, from the ball-of-fluff stage to the heartbreaking farewell." ( The New York Times)

Love you, Marley!

This audiobook kept me company through a weekend of chores and gardening. I hardly noticed the work! It's warm and human and sentimental; sometimes laugh-out-loud funny and sometimes touching or downright sad. I howled throughout the last 30 minutes!

Ok, so the author (who reads this) is a big soppy mutt and should maybe be reined in a bit on the sentimentality, but he is American, after all. Just wallow in it.

A pleasant and heart-warming story

This was a feel-good listen about a loyal and loveable family pet and friend. If you're anything like me, this audiobook will stir thoughts about your own family pet and remind you what incredible animals dogs really are!

Would recommend it as a nice listen for those just getting into audiobooks.

A truly fun story but also touching

If you want to add a book that is for an easy and relaxing reading/listening, this is the one. I would pick this one when I m tired of listening those more intense or any other more brain work involving books. It gives me smiles and giggles. But it is also touching, moving and empowering, because it is simple enough and good enough.

Big sentimental book

Loved the story but wished John Grogan had someone else reading. Obviously writing is he forte!

Heart warming story

This was a truly heartwarming story that had all the best elements - tears, laughter and suspense! That may sound cheesey, but the wry sense of humour that this story is told with prevents that, and makes it throughly enjoyable from start to finish. It also made me feel a LOT better about my own dog-training struggles! I definately reccommend this to anyone!

I could not stop listening

This book had me gripped from the minute I started listening. As I walked to and from my norwegian class John Grogan kept me company with a wonderful story, from the moment Marley entered their lifes and until the inevitable parting through death. The book was narrated with a real sense of feeling, it was more than a simple reading, there was much humour, seriousness and eventually sadness portrayed in the voice of the owner of this screwy dog and listening to this audiobook was probably far better than simply reading it. In contrast to many other audiobooks, it was hard to be distracted away from John Grogan's voice, the emotional tones in his voice kept leading me back into the story. I believe I laughed when he laughed, and certainly cried when he cried. I like the fact the author did the narration. It really made this audiobook worthwhile. I would recommend this audiobook to all, not just dog lovers. From me it gets a ten out of ten.

This is an audiobook not to be missed.

Lots of Emotions

Loved the storyline to this. As a true lover of dogs, reading the life of marley with his crazy ways and the family he lived with sent me into laughter with tears and tears of sadness. Very easy reading and will read again.

Abridged

My daughter was really looking forward to reading Marley and Me. However you can only get the unabridged version in paperback and only the abridged in audible. My daughter enjoys reading the paperback at the same time as listening to the audible. As the the two mediums don't match we have had to return the audible.
