An in-depth look at the philosophical issues behind HBO's Game of Thrones television series and the books that inspired it...
George R. R. Martin's New York Times best-selling epic fantasy book series, A Song of Ice and Fire, and the HBO television show adapted from it, have earned critical acclaim and inspired fanatic devotion. This book delves into the many philosophical questions that arise in this complex, character-driven series, including: Is it right for a "good" king to usurp the throne of a "bad" one and murder his family? How far should you go to protect your family and its secrets? In a fantasy universe with medieval mores and ethics, can female characters reflect modern feminist ideals?
Essential reading for fans, Game of Thrones and Philosophy will enrich your experience of your favorite medieval fantasy series.

Certainly ranks in my top twenty
I enjoyed the discussion about God and the links to the game of thrones gods. In particular the warrior philosophy was discussed at length which I enjoyed
Discussions of moral correctness particularly in the case Ned
Yes certainly I could not out the boom down so to speak very gripping
Very enjoyable book that made me think about the real life implication of the characters I'm the game of thrones. It made me look at complicated philisophical ideas in an entirely new light by applying them to my favourite series. You don't have to be an expert in any field to enjoy this boo, if you have read the booms or even just watched the series you will enjoy this book
"Open your eyes and read this please"
Is this a great work of philosophy... no. Does it make you think about topics in different ways...yes. Look, the book might have flaws but I think any book that causes critical thinking is a good thing. If you disagree with the contents, good! At least you are thinking.
I have read the hyper-critical of this work and honestly, the bad reviews convinced me to get it. Someone goes on a 750 word rant about how their thoughts are far superior than the book just make me want to see what the fuss is all about. Rather than trying to prove who has the bigger brain just open up, listen and compare or contrast you own thoughts and opinions.
This book facilitated free thought and that is what philosophy is all about...the investigation of the nature, causes, or principles of reality, knowledge, or based on logical reasoning rather than empirical methods.
I love Martin's book series and HBO's series and this is a good companion.
"An easily understood treatise on philosophy"
A clear discussion of the basis of a number of philosophical schools, both political and ethical using examples based on the characters in the books and identifying criticisms that are not immediately evident. Chapters are written by a number of authors in their areas of expertise.
Robin Sachs clearly understands the material and his pace and inflections add clarity to the discussion.
Wisdom is like dragons and fears neither fear nor swords.
"Worth Listening To"
I had been looking for something that addressed GOT philosophy and themes and this book fit the bill. It is a collection of summaries by different authors about various characters and themes in the books. It was written after the first HBO season and after all 5 books had been written so spoiler alerts are included in the foward. Although the narrator was a little monotone at times, it didn't take away from the viewpoints of the authors. Some of the content could get a little dry esp the section on physicalism. Also, you could totally tell the authors who had read all 5 books from the ones who had only watched the first HBO season. For example, one author referred to Sir Jorah Mormont fleeing Kings Landing for Bravos after the city was sacked by Robert Baratheon. That's totally not true. Sir Jorah was exiled from Bear Island by Eddard Stark after he captured some poachers and sold them to slavers for money. Also, one of the authors kept calling Stannis, Stanley. Otherwise, this book was well worth listening to.
"A fun exploration of philosophy"
I love applying philosophy to pop culture. It really helps me understand the philosophical concepts-- or makes be believe that I understand them better.
I read a lot of science usually. The philosophy is a mental palate cleanser.
"Philosophical Discussion of a Favorite Subject"
Painless intro to philosophy
Robin Sachs has a wonderful voice, rich and unstressed, perfectly paced.
Robb Stark should have studied Machiavelli's "The Prince" before becoming King of the North.
Some philosophers discussed: Hobbes, Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Sartre, Nietzsche.
Some concepts discussed: the nature of happiness, moral luck, chivalry, metaphysical fatalism, game theory, just war theory
"Great book on Philosophy"
If you like Philosophy and you've read all the game of thrones books, this is a great book for you. It's philosophy, explained with characters of Game of Thrones. The author takes philosophers from history and explains their principles through the characters and happenings of GOT. Brilliant. I have a deeper understanding of some of the philosophers studies and a better understanding of GOT and George RR Martin after reading this.
I learned nothing new, and the book was an absolute ordeal to suffer through. This book is the equivalent of listening to Dr. Phil talk about nothing for 9 hours.
I already started my next book, it's about the great World War 2 generals, Patton, Montgomery, and Rommel.
It was boring, everything about this book was boring. The narrator wasn't terrible, and one star is probably a bit harsh. After the first few hours I just wanted to suffer through, and finish it.
This entire book should have been thrown onto Khal Drogo's funeral pyre, then burned on the Blackwater with Stannis Baratheon's fleet, and finally been shot with a cross bow by Tyrion Lannister.
Unless you are heavy into deep philosophy, and you want 9 hours of your life you will never get back...STAY AWAY FROM THIS BOOK. I will try to get my credit back from Audible.
