Publisher's Summary

Recorded on location in the Somerset Levels, in the garden of keen birdwatcher, writer, and broadcaster Stephen Moss, A Guide to British Garden Birds is a helpful, practical guide to help you sort out your blue tits from your great tits and your hedge sparrows from your tree sparrows.

Joining Brett and Stephen is wildlife sound recordist Chris Watson, armed with an array of microphones to allow Brett, Stephen, and listeners to eavesdrop on the songs, calls, and alarm cries of the birds in the Somerset garden.

This five part series first appeared on BBC Radio 4 and has been compiled here as one complete download. Each episode focuses on a different group of birds. Not only does the series provide useful information on how to identify the various spring-time visitors, but it also discusses the behaviour of these birds and includes tips on how to encourage more birds into your garden.

What the Critics Say

" Small Egyptian hawks aside, if you're looking for something snappy to help you decode tomorrow's dawn chorus, this will do nicely. Radio 4's Brett Westwood invites you to eavesdrop on a huge variety of birds singing their hearts out in the Somerset levels."(Saturday Guardian)

    "Very pleasant"
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I would have loved to listen to this in one sitting. Not always possible with small children, but it is nice to listen to in the garden on a summer's day or in the park.

    Any additional comments?

A lovely gentle recording and quite relaxing.

"Great introduction to UK garden bird song"
If you could sum up A Guide to British Garden Birds in three words, what would they be?

    Informative, entertaining, relaxing

    Any additional comments?

A casual introduction to common garden bird calls. Full of interesting facts and doesn't take itself to seriously. Sadly only an hour long!
