"... an excellent performance that truly brings the author's words to life...Redgrave inhabits the author's homey prose as easily as slipping into a comfy pair of slippers... " (Publishers Weekly)
Disappointed - Having read the book I was looking forward to enjoying the recording as much as Coming Home read by Hannah Gordon. Vanessa Redgrave didn't define the characters adequately so the weaving of the story was blurred and eventually I gave up listening, pity.
"A Good Read"
Rosamunde Pilcher is only second to Jane Austin in my world, with The Shell Seekers on a par with Pride and Prejudice. Winter Solstice is not exciting in any way, it is like comfort food...filling and satisfying. It is a simple story about simple people who could be people you know or used to know. Do not let me give you the idea that this means the story is boring, it is not, not at all. I loved getting to know the characters, sharing their losses, pleasures and loves, especially Oscar. This is a perfect book to curl up with when you want soothing or to be taken out of your own woes for a short time and go for a brief visit somewhere else.
"I Loved this Audio"
The reading by Lynne Redgrave was superb, she made my favorite characters come to life. The only thing I didn't like, was that I accidently bought the abridged version, my favorite part was edited out for the audio. Winter Solstice is my favorite Rosamund Pilcher book,
A friend wanted me to read this book and actually bought me another one by Ms Pilcher. I am looking forward to listening and reading more of her books.
"Sweet story, wonderfully read"
I read this book some years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. This abridged audio version is a most enjoyable version, for the very relatable characters, the very descriptive prose, the satisfaction of characters trying to make life better for each other, and the absolutely wonderful reading by Lynn Redgrave. Early on this version spends a little too much time on a few less significant characters, but then it gets back on track and moves nicely forward. Highly recommended!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Good characters and a satisfying story.
"Cliff notes version"
This was such a disappointment. The abridged version took out all the character development, world building and heart that make this book great.
I read this book every Christmas and this year I thought I would try the audio version. Mistake.
I picked this book because I love the narrator, Lynne Redgrave but was sorely disappointed by the content of the book which was too sickly sweet and had everything wrapping up to neatly. The one bad thing that does happen, a mother & daughter dying, is glossed over and I felt was added only to make the dad available to marry a more suitable mate. The fact that the dad got over the death of his wife & daughter in two months and is ready to marry again didn't seem realistic or sit well with me. Everything that happens was easily predicted ahead of time.
I love this book but not the abridged version which is missing some components that help flesh out the characters.. I love Lynn Redgraves interpretation of the voices.. Just wish it was the entire story.. I will delete it without finishing it..
"Narrated by Ms. Redgrave"
She did a terrific job, unlike other narrators for Ms. Pilcher's books. Thank-you so much
"Wonderful abridged version of an excellent story"
Yes, because Winter Solstice is well written and pleasantly read by the narrator. Lynn Redgrave's voice is perfect for this novel.
The excellent writing and plot.
