Summary
Ben stepped outside the south door of the little cabin - just to take a quick look around. He hadn't yet put on his coat, and the cool air felt refreshing. He was glad, however, that there was no wind this morning, or it would really be cold.
Ben's breath formed steamy puffs, visible in the crisp air. He could see that frost covered the ground. It was quiet this morning, except for the occasional crowing of the roosters.
As he started to turn back inside, he saw something out of the corner of his eye. Slipping back inside, Ben grasped the Colt hanging in its holster by the door, and then eased outside once again. He took cover behind the nearest tree.

"Save with Sheriff Ben on patrol"
This novella is a sort of 'day in the life of' story, though it takes place over more days than one. The recently elected sheriff starts his early morning by shooting a couple of men come to ambush him before breakfast and it all just prodded on from there - recruiting more deputies, seeing his girl, eating, and rounding up bandits, all mostly with a cigar in his mouth. All written in present detail to be immediate but emotionless and flt. It read more like a police report and badly needed to be lifted from the two dimensional. Even Skyler Morgan's fine reading was unable to infuse character into the wooden protagonists.
But perhaps most Westerns are like this? I don't know, but I personally though it tedious. although, fleshed out, it might make an acceptable film.
