Summary
Kevin Khatchadourian killed several of his fellow high school students, a cafeteria worker, and a teacher, shortly before his 16th birthday. He is visited in prison by his mother, Eva, who narrates in a series of letters to her estranged husband, Franklin, the story of Kevin's upbringing. A successsful career woman, Eva is reluctant to forgo her independence and the life she shares with Franklin to become a mother. Once Kevin is born, she experiences extreme alienation and dislike of Kevin as he grows up to become a spiteful and cruel child. When Kevin commits his murderous act, Eva fears that her own shortcomings may have shaped what her son has become. But how much is she to blame?

Harrowing
I resisted reading this book for a long time. I thought that it would be more difficult to stop it as an audiobook. I was really engrossed. I found it a very powerful story made even more powerful by one of the best readers I have ever heard. Lorelei King is magnificent in every book I have heard.

Brilliant but Harrowing!
I found this audiobook a profoundly disturbing experience. It is brilliantly written and beautifully narrated, but it could put you off having kids.
What do you do if your child is a psychopath? This book charts the dread, shame and heartache of being just such a parent. A mothers place is in the wrong it seems.
I found this book unremittingly dark. If you have the stomach for it, it is a brilliant book, but it did nothing for my faith in human nature. The final "bonus" chapter is an excellent interview with the Lionel Shriver - she has no kids!

Best book I've read in a while
Really intriguing story, especially to tell it from the mother's perspective in the form of writing letters. You can see where the story is heading so nothing is really a surprise but it's brilliantly told and keeps you hooked.

Finished in a flash
I downloaded this as a 'filler' between credits, and I wasn't disappointed, except for the fact that I finished it within 3 days and have now had to down load another 'filler'! Very expensive this.
Any way back to the book, I have only good things to say about this, the movie was very well adapted, this book is written in a series of letters of Eva to her husband Franklin about their son. It's gently read. It really creates and builds the character of Kevin, and his mum. It make should want to slap the dad for being so gullible.
I really recommend this book, it's brief, but effective and there is a handy interview at the end with the author (love when they do that) which really explains why she wrote this book. It questions motherhood and maternal instincts.

one of my favourite books
I have read this book several times over many years. As a study on what evil is or is not, where we decide it comes from - nature, nature. society constructs. brilliant characterization and a gripping read. as always I couldn't put it down. the narrator is brilliant too. more like acting than reading aloud a book.

Fantastic
Gripping. Fantastic story. Interesting perspective. Wonderfully told and read. First I've read of Lionel Shriver but will not be the last.

Creepy thriller
Excellent book that kept me on the edge of my seat. As a mother of two beautiful children I found it somewhat far fetched in places. You can tell that the author isn't a mother herself. However I enjoyed this book immensely and would recommend it.

Abridged Version
Great story & narration, but doesn't seem to mention anywhere that this is a heavily abridged version of the novel. However, it turned out to be a great way to digest the story easily.
