Summary

Uncle Fred is one of the hottest earls who ever donned a coronet. Or as he crisply puts it, 'There are no limits, literally none, to what I can achieve in the springtime.'

Even so, his gifts are stretched to the limit when he is urged by Lord Emsworth to save his prize pig, the Empress of Blandings, from the enforced slimming cure of the haughty Duke of Dunstable. Pongo Twistleton knows his debonair but wild uncle shouldn't really be allowed at large - especially when disguised as a brain surgeon. He fears the worst. And in yet another brilliant novel by the master of English comedy, Pongo will soon find his fears are amply justified.

Critic reviews

"Hilarious....Jonathan Cecil succeeds all around, reading expressively and slowly....Immensely enjoyable listening." ( AudioFile)

Just Hilarious…

PG Wodehouse in the finest of form.

If you are feeling under the weather, just wallow—like a proverbial hippo—in the salve of his exquisite prose, and hilarious humor.

Brilliant.

My favourite Wodehouse well read and unabridged. It was a total joy to listen to from start to finish.

PG Wodehouse - a linguistic gymnast!

A master of linguistic gymnastics, P.G. Wodehouse never fails to entertain. As a fan of Jeeves and Wooster, I was overjoyed to meet up again with Bertie's old pals 'Offy' Prosser and Sir Roderick Glossop. Bizarre reasoning, bleeding hearts, colourful characters and The Empress of Blandings Castle all come together to form a story with as many twists as a pig's tail!

Simply the best!

I’ve always been a great fan of PG Wodehouse and it’s difficult to choose a favourite, but this story really has it all and I find myself laughing out loud at some of the magnificent descriptions and twists and turns of this wonderful story. PGW’s use of English has never been better and his story with the Earl of Ickenham, Pongo, Lord Emsworth and the Duke of Dunstable has all the ingredients of a great farce. It is brilliantly read, too, and I enjoy it again and again.

Always enjoyable

The star of this is Jonathan Cecil. In a complicated story he voices each character so well that you could be watching a play.

Like a Shakespearean Comedy

Wodehouse at his storytelling best: a rollicking farce, set to Wodehouse's delicious language. Cecil gives a tour de force performance. His characters are beautifully realised. No one does Wodehouse like Cecil.
