This book will definitely put your emotions through the ringer!
There is a lot of angst in this book and maybe I'm a sucker but I truly loved this story! I know there is some controversy in other reviews and it's because of that that I had to read it myself and I'm so glad I did.
Kate is one hell of a strong woman. Some might say she's a doormat but when you deeply love someone despite their flaws, your emotions get the better of you. Her soul mate ended up marrying her best, so Katie pushed her feelings aside and was there for Rachel every step of the way. It was easy because Shane was in the marines and constantly being deployed, however, tragedy strikes and Kate puts her life aside to be there for the kids and Shane. She's an amazing person and loves those kids like they're her own. A year after Rachel's death, Kate is called upon to check on Shane and when she finds him and alcohol is involved; the lines get blurred - big time!!
Their story is a roller coaster of emotions. Shane is a dickhead a lot and I do not agree with the way he treats Kate. My belief is that he was a scared boy afraid of his emotions and the way he felt for Kate when they were younger which made him resort to go with a safer choice. Now years later, he's an angry man and is stilled scared of his emotions but after being with Kate, his walls slowly come down. After he makes a colossal mistake shattering everything, he finally sees the light and will do everything he can to fix it..... but will it be too late?!!
This is one of those books that's mesmerizing. It was absolutely amazing and intriguing. At the same time I was completely in love with Kate, I completely hated and abhorred Shane and how awful he was to her. Throughout almost the entire story, I wanted to hurt him...bad...just because he kept hurting Kate over and over again. It's a highly emotional, angst-filled story...but because of that, not everyone is going to be able to enjoy it.
Shane is an alpha-hole in every single sense of the word. And even after finishing the book, I'm not so sure I like him at all. BUT for me, the author made that work. I wanted to lash out about how unfairly he treated Kate, but there were reasons...not good ones mind you, but reasons that he fully believed. He lied to himself so many times about so many things to do with Kate.
They met when they were teenagers in a weird foster parent situation that I never really fully understood. But from the moment they met, there was something between them...something he refused to acknowledge, because if nothing else, Shane is completely stubborn...to a fault. And that is his biggest fault. He refuses...absolutely refuses...to accept that he can feel something for Kate. He won't allow it, and so he lashes out at her over and over again...even when he desperately wants her.
The problem...not only does she love him, but she's the primary caregiver for his kids. Since he's gone on deployments so much of the time, she's more of a parent to them than he is. Even when she finally reaches the point of telling him to go screw himself, she can't leave...there are 4 kids that she'd have to abandon to do that...and she just can't. Those are her kids even if she didn't give birth to them.
But despite all that, this book was so good. My one real complaint besides the total unlikeable qualities of Shane is that I wish Kate had gotten more of a victory in the end. This is a romance novel so you know that things will end up with an HEA. I just wish she'd gotten more concessions at that point from Shane. I don't want to post any spoilers about all that. I just wish there had been more. The entire book was extremely emotional, but at that point, it didn't feel as emotionally deep as the rest of the book had been. I wish the author had dug deeper into Shane to achieve that. Kate deserved it...and then this book might have been at the top of my favorite reads of the year.
But as it is, it was still an amazingly good and engrossing read. Emotionally, it captured me and never let me go.
In my opinion the narrator (s) make a story or kill it. This 2 nailed it. The story was everything a love story should be. Best book I've heard in a long time. It was good from the very beginning to the end.
"I just loved the narrators!!!"
The narrators usually make or break the audio book and 80% of the time they ruin the audio book for me. It was so now the case with this audio book, both narrators complimented each other and made the story that much better. I just closed my eyes and let their voices take me through a roller coaster of feelings.
This story was so good and original. Storyline was so different than the usual, but it was a perfect love story with a strong woman! Loved it!
"Amazing audio experience for amazing book!"
Yes, the narrators nailed the characters and added so much emotion to the already emotional storyline.
The entire book was amazing, heart-wrencing and just a great read.
He brougnht Shane to life for me. Made him a person.
"Angst, loss, regret, and anger meets HEA"
This book is told with dual POVs and narrated by Alastair Haynesbridge and Charlotte North (Audible neglected to mention her as a narrator). The narration itself was very good. Alastair and Charlotte were great at making each character sound unique so the dialogue was easy to follow. They also succeeded quite well at intoning characters of the opposite sex.
It was hard to like Shane. He was just so angry and unappreciative. Katie was this selfless wonder woman who took on the thankless job of a replacement mother for a family of 4 children. From the start of the book, I loved Katie. She was so strong, but wow did she take such abuse from Shane without a fight. I respected her for taking the high road in her confrontations, though after time I wished she could verbalize her retaliatory thoughts and stand up to him. Of course, Katie eventually does just that but it takes a while.
The romance...smoldering looks built up the angst and when Shane and Katie got together, it was definitely hot and sexy. Those interludes were few and far between, but I prefer more of a plot and story than repeated romps in the sack.
I fell in love with Katie's family of adopted brothers, sisters, and cousins. They were such a tight if somewhat unconventional family unit. I loved Katie's fiercely protective brothers - especially Abraham (Bram). He fought back against Shane when Katie couldn't and/or wouldn't.
Speaking of Bram, he gets his own story in book #2 of the Unbreak My Heart Series. Change of Heart follows the relationship between Bram and Anita. This audio book includes a teaser chapter of book two.
Overall, this book was credit worthy. I laughed and cried and am interested in continuing the series once it is available on Audible.
