In mid-nineteenth-century Ireland, charming Kathleen and dashing Michael harbor secrets and dreams. Imagining a life beyond the kitchen and fields of the wealthy family they both work for, they plot to leave their homeland, marry, and raise the child Kathleen is secretly carrying. The luck of the Irish, however, is not on their side.
Soon, they find themselves swept up in circumstances they never could have fathomed. Kathleen is forced to marry against her will and immigrate to New Zealand. Michael is imprisoned for rebellion and exiled to Australia. As time passes and their new lives march on, they long for those stolen moments in the lush green fields of their native land. And they both still dream of escape, with no idea of how close fate will eventually bring them.

"Classic "What Might've Been""
This has to be the most FRUSTRATING book I've ever read, though not necessarily in a bad way. Without giving too much of the story, the way fate circles these 2 is almost torture. I spent the entire book going crazy wondering how it would turn out. It certainly keeps your attention to the end! :-)
this book along with other books from Sarah Lark has given me a wave of emotions happy sad mad ready to beat some of these men an women at times but she has this way of making me feel like I'm right there in the middle of this story to me she is as wonderful as Ken Follet I really love these books and can not wait for more in english .
"Excellent historical novel"
I recommend this book to fans of historical fiction. This book is set around the Irish potato famine and portrays the consequences to the farmers both immediately and in their lives. It clearly shows their struggles to survive and the inequities they suffered. Happily it also demonstrates their route to happiness
"Plight of women who found there life in New Zealan"
Interesting tale of 3 women who found there home in New Zealand. A mix of petty thieves and new settlers. Their lives entangled with hard times and dreams of their past lives. Learning how to survive and about the Maori that who first settle the Islands.
"A struggle !"
All the heartache and struggle through out this book listening and the two characters I wanted so badly to be together did not .. As complicated with the other characters with up and downs it also was too much . I was just very disappointed..
