Publisher's Summary

A classic Agatha Christie short story, available individually for the first time in digital audio, performed by Christopher Lee.

When wealthy spinster Emily French is found murdered, suspicion falls to Leonard Vole, the man to whom she hastily bequeathed her riches before she died. Leonard assures the investigators that his wife, Romaine Heilger, can provide them with an alibi. However, when questioned, Romaine informs the police that Vole returned home late that night covered in blood.

During the trial, Ms French's housekeeper, Janet, gives damning evidence against Vole, but as Romaine's cross-examination begins, her motives come under scrutiny from the courtroom. One question remains: will justice out?

What the Critics Say

"The plots are so good that one marvels...most of them would have made a full length thriller." (Daily Mirror)

    "Lee-ly good narration"

An intriguing short story from the master, similar in tone to the likes of Endless Night and And Then There Were None, in terms of darker motives undisguised by a kindly Marple or Poirot protagonist: plumbs darker depths, leaving you with a classic Christie twist. Superbly narrated by the 'other' Master!

    "Fine Christie, setting well described"
Would you consider the audio edition of The Witness for the Prosecution: An Agatha Christie Short Story to be better than the print version?

I enjoyed the characters, so I would say yes

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Witness for the Prosecution: An Agatha Christie Short Story?

I loved any scene with the lawyer in conversation, Lee's voice is a gem

Which character – as performed by Christopher Lee – was your favourite?

    The lawyer, by far

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    no tag line

    Any additional comments?

Although the ending was guessed at it in no way spoilt the story. I think listening to Christopher Lee talking about shopping in Tesco would be fascinating, and in this book he excels at character and scence setting. Much fun

The narrator, Christopher Lee, with his distinctive voice and pace made this very enjoyable.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It's a short mystery and as such, should be enjoyed in one sitting (or dog walk in my case)
