Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Winner: New Writer of the Year – Specsavers National Book Awards 2012.

When Harold Fry nips out one morning to post a letter, leaving his wife hoovering upstairs, he has no idea that he is about to walk from one end of the country to the other. He has no hiking boots or map, let alone a compass, waterproof, or mobile phone. All he knows is that he must keep walking - to save someone else's life.

Harold Fry is the most ordinary of men. He just might be a hero for us all.

Oscar-winner Jim Broadbent has starred in a huge range of films, from British favourites including Bridget Jones, Hot Fuzz and The Iron Lady, to Hollywood blockbusters such as Moulin Rouge, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and the Harry Potter films. He is set to star in the upcoming film adaptation of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry.

Critic reviews

“From the moment I met Harold Fry, I didn't want to leave him. Impossible to put down.” (Erica Wagner, The Times)

“Harold Fry is infuriating, hilarious and completely out of his depth, but I held my breath at his every blister and cramp and, felt, as if by turning the pages, I might help his impossible quest succeed. Marvellous!” (Helen Simonson, author of Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand)

“A magical, moving and uplifting tale about a man's journey across Britain and into his own heart.” (Deborah Moggach)
“I loved this book. I loved its purity, its brutality and unerring honesty. I don't think I have read such richly composed metaphors before. They are like shooting stars glittering across each page. I can't believe this is her first novel- I wait with bated breath for her next.” (Natascha McElhone)

“The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry isn’t just a book I enjoyed reading, it’s a book I feel lucky to have read. It takes the most ordinary and unassuming of men and turns him into a hero for us all. Harold Fry faces the same questions we all do as we age, questions about the meaning of our lives, faith and love, but confronts them in a most surprising way. To go on this journey with him will not only break your heart, it might also just heal it.” (Tiffany Baker, New York Times best-selling author of The Little Giant of Aberdeen County)

Dreamy!

Wonderful vocal delivery which perfectly matched the story content. Listened to the majority of the book over a long coach journey to Italy but had to rewind frequently because the calming tones made me sleepy!!
Thoroughly enjoyed this book - great insight into older guy anxst. Usually recommend books between girl friends but was very happy to recommend this to the blokes as well.

Jim Broadbent reads with sincerity.

I had started to read this book on my Kindle Fire when I spotted a fore note that said that it was available as an audible download read by Jim Broadbent. In a matter of minutes I was listening to Mr Broadbent as Harold Fry whilst reading along at the same time. I was able to continue listening as I decorated my son's room, and carry on listening an reading after a shower and bed.

The preamble to this review, apart from demonstrating the journey that electronic books have already taken us, hopefully demonstrates what an engrossing book this is. If you have previously read it and are considering the audiobook then I can say with all sincerity that Jim Broadbent brings real depth to the characters with a simplicity of emotion that is heart wrenching. If you have not read the book before, and like I was, are uncertain of the content, here is a brief synopsis: A retired man (of no distinction, with no particular friends, just a cold marriage), Harold Fry, receives a letter from an acquaintance that he hasn't seen or spoken to in twenty years. Said letter, and a chance encounter, cause him to spontaneously walk hundreds of miles in what becomes a modern day pilgrimage, to visit this former acquaintance. This is a journey of revelation for Harold and for the reader as he goes through highs and lows physically an emotionally. Beautifully written, beautifully read, the combination of the two drawers the reader in to a realisation that life has depth and it is nothing without truth and compassion.

an unusual but fascinating read

What made the experience of listening to The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry the most enjoyable?

many things Jim Braudbent as reader was very good, but it was an unexpected story; not sure I have read anything like that before

What other book might you compare The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry to, and why?

I am not sure I can compare it to any other book. it was a journey, but not one you would read as a fantasy. the conflict was largely internal.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

I enjoyed the whole book, but the scene I enjoyed the most was the end, there were lessons in life for us all there

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I was moved by the scene when Harold met with his wife at the end a very touching scene

Any additional comments?

a smashing book, I would recommend it as an interesting and unusual read. I really enjoyed it

Great narration and a moving story

I thouroughly enjoyed this book. There are some books which I think are enhanced by the qulaity of the narration and this is one of them Jim Broadbent is thoroughly convincing.

The events of the story are perhaps ulikley, but the storytelling is convincing. We are all leadng lives of quiet desparation but this is essentailly a story of hope and redemption, it is in parts very moving as Harold's personal journey in coming to terms with his past is mirrored through the actual journey that he takes.

What a surprising and wonderful story

This is a wonderful and surprising story - very realistic in its view of life and doesn't sugar-coat any of the more difficult aspects of relationships. I was pleasantly surprised because I don't usually go for fictional writing, but I would certainly recommend this book, and its wonderful narrator, to everyone.

Outstanding

A walk through grief and out the other side. Beautifully written, and perfectly read by Jim Broadbent. I was totally absorbed, profoundly touched. My favourite listen so far. But I wouldn't recommend it to the newly bereaved as there are many triggers within the story that may be difficult. On the whole an uplifting read, and delightfully funny at times, always laughing at oneself rather than at others.

Heartwarming and Inspiring

I finished this book with a renewed vigour for life. It restored my faith in humanity and it made me want to be a bit more ‘Harold’. Beautifully written and addictive. I would sometimes stay sat in the car, on the drive, just to keep listening!
