Summary

Winner: New Writer of the Year – Specsavers National Book Awards 2012.
When Harold Fry nips out one morning to post a letter, leaving his wife hoovering upstairs, he has no idea that he is about to walk from one end of the country to the other. He has no hiking boots or map, let alone a compass, waterproof, or mobile phone. All he knows is that he must keep walking - to save someone else's life.
Harold Fry is the most ordinary of men. He just might be a hero for us all.
Oscar-winner Jim Broadbent has starred in a huge range of films, from British favourites including Bridget Jones, Hot Fuzz and The Iron Lady, to Hollywood blockbusters such as Moulin Rouge, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and the Harry Potter films. He is set to star in the upcoming film adaptation of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry.
Critic reviews
“From the moment I met Harold Fry, I didn't want to leave him. Impossible to put down.” (Erica Wagner, The Times)
“Harold Fry is infuriating, hilarious and completely out of his depth, but I held my breath at his every blister and cramp and, felt, as if by turning the pages, I might help his impossible quest succeed. Marvellous!” (Helen Simonson, author of Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand)
“The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry isn’t just a book I enjoyed reading, it’s a book I feel lucky to have read. It takes the most ordinary and unassuming of men and turns him into a hero for us all. Harold Fry faces the same questions we all do as we age, questions about the meaning of our lives, faith and love, but confronts them in a most surprising way. To go on this journey with him will not only break your heart, it might also just heal it.” (Tiffany Baker, New York Times best-selling author of The Little Giant of Aberdeen County)

follow your heart
Beautiful story, not to be missed. You will follow the storyteller, and you will follow Harold Fry with all your heart. The meaning of broken love, of irreversible loss, and of human mercy. This is a joyful story, despite it is sad...

Unlikely!
Wasn't sure what to expect with this but it is (in my opinion) excellent. Excellent narration and a great and original story line that kept me listening to the end. Perhaps not an overly taxing listen but enjoyable non the less. Give it a try

An unlikely hit!
Didn't know whether to take a punt on this one or not - but the reviews seemed relentlessly positive so I did...and I certainly agree with all the hype. Though the symbolism is occasionally rather forced - it may seem a little more laboured due to the nature of an audio book and the emphasis given to it by the narrator - the voice of Jim Broadbent alone makes this worth listening to. He invests the protagonist with such sympathy that you almost feel like cheering him on through the impossible chore of the walk ahead of him. The narrative hook of the hidden connection between Harold and his quest gives an added dimension for the listener to hang on for and the characterisation is deftly handled by the author. Well worth that punt after all!

A gentle, engaging story
A gently gripping story about the determination of a man who has lived a rather bland life to make a last big gesture, late in life. I was hooked!

Bought for all my friends
Fabulous story with Jim Broadbent narrating - the perfect marriage. I loved it so much I bought it for three of my friends. The ending had me walking the dog with big ploppy tears running down my face. Can't wait for Rachel Joyce's next book.

Such a journey for Harold and me too!
Would you listen to The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry again? Why?
Absolutely! This is a "read & reread" book. Harold took us all with him... His fellow characters and I... I'm sure that I'll find something new with each subsequent read :D
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry?
The cafe scene... And Harold's ability to be alone and yet share himself and remain true to his beliefs ... Very powerful
What does Jim Broadbent bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
Jim IS Harold in the recording ... He speaks with Harold's despair, dismay and courage underpinning each word, phrase and silence
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Totally! Could NOT wait to get to the reading time of my day ... Didn't watch telly at all ... Just listened to Harold's tale
Any additional comments?
Love this book... Took a chance as it was outside my usual 'type' but I'm so do glad I tried it! On my top 20 list for sure :D

An adventure that rebuilt a lifetime!
This hugely entertaining, humorous, enlightening and, at times, sombre story is an insight into how easily people can isolate themselves from others by not sharing their feelings. It has given me a different perspective on my own as well as other's prejudices. Thank God for Harold Fry he has rebuilt my faith in human kindness! You must must must read this book!
