Does your life feel like a dress rehearsal? Do you long to enter the limelight and steal the show? But what do you do when you're playing second fiddle to an arrogant actor who barely knows your name? And, more importantly, what do you do when you find yourself falling in love with his wife?

Yes, very interested the whole way through and perfect for a tube book.
I love the acting culture and books that are based around things and places i know this was funny, witty and a good story to follow.
Steve, very believable realistic and easy to follow. also i love under dog stories.
classic under dog story set against the hard life of a west end actor.
I became utterly bored with this and couldn't finish it.
It has a very good start - I liked the first person narrative, the initial premise was good and so was the narrator. I happily listened to a number of chapters before it became a hard slog to continue.
This is an immensely warm hearted novel - and the narration is quite extraordinary. Paul Thornley hits just the right note with the voices he chooses - the downbeat Steve, and teh unruly Josh - but his voice for Nora is extraordinary - he makes her totally come to life - magical and fascinating and yet also with a very loveable integrity. Characters are multi dimensional and there are some extremely funny moments. I'm missing living with them already!
This was my second David Nicholls audio book and I enjoyed this story of the under dog and understudy Stephen McQueen and his escapades even more than "US" which I also really enjoyed.
Great performance from the narrator too.
A life not going as intended made more poignant by contrast with the proximity of another's success, this is a story of failed acting ambition and a lost relationship as told from the perspective of the main protagonist, Stephen.
The character is captured well by the narrator, Paul Thornley, in an excellent reading and Mr. Nicholl's dialogue and text is, at times, both witty and just tinged with an equal quantity of hope and despair.
I did enjoy this book but am still uncertain if it has left me sad for the loss of the past or hopeful for life to come. Recommended.
