Now in her 90s, Mrs Dallimore is also coming to terms with her situation. Old age is finally catching up with her. As they form the bond of unexpected friendship, Lizzie begins to realise that she's not the only person to attract bad luck and that sometimes life has a way of surprising you....

disappointing

Poor old Clarissa, so many losses !! surely at least one character could have stuck around. As the list of deceased lengthened, I began to wonder if Erica James had run out of ideas , didn't know quite where to go with these characters so sent them on their way via the coffin shuttle. 62 chapters of dreariness

Spoilt by the narrator

Would you try another book written by Erica James or narrated by Genevieve Swallow?

I have now tried at least half a dozen times to listen to this but the narrators appallingly bad accents just ruins it if she thinks she can do a Norfolk accent please disabuse her of this it was just irritating and at times she forgets which a cent shes meant to be using. I think the story feels as though it would be great but Ill never know

What did you like best about this story?

The charscters

Would you be willing to try another one of Genevieve Swallow’s performances?

No

Was The Song of the Skylark worth the listening time?

No

Any additional comments?

I will make sure I never buy another audio book with this narrator

A good listen

Where does The Song of the Skylark rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I have listened to lots of audiobooks. I very much enjoyed it however it wasn't my favourite audiobook nor was it my favourite Erica James novel but it was very still very engaging. I loved the concept of the older lady telling the young girl about her life and the young girl realising that these older ladies have led amazing lives. They were indeed young once too!

What other book might you compare The Song of the Skylark to, and why?

I suppose it is a bit similar to The Dandelion Years also by Erica James. Saskia lives with her grandfathers, whom she adores and values, so again you have the relationship between the older and the younger characters.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The scenes of Mrs Dallimore recounting the war years.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Across the years.

Any additional comments?

Very much recommended.

perfect summer companion

I listened to this book whilst gardening and sewing. The story weaves together easily whilst touching on real life issues such as dementia.

Very easy to listen too and kept me wanting to find it how all the characters lives turned out. Don't be out off by other reviews saying the accents were bad, I actually found them endearing.

Charming book. Disastrous reader.

This was a lovely story, completely ruined by the reader. The reading was slow and stilted, with emphasis frequently put in the wrong place. Such a pity!
