Summary

'You kept my secret. I know yours now. That makes us even.'

Paul has been led into a life of crime by his schoolyard protector, Daniel - but one night, what started as petty theft escalates fatally. Now, at 19, Paul must bear witness against his friend to avoid imprisonment.

Louisa has her own dark secrets. Having fled from them many years ago, she now spends her days steeped in history, renovating the grounds of a crumbling Elizabethan mansion. But her fragile peace is shattered when she meets Paul; he's the image of the one person she never thought she'd see again. A relationship develops between them, and Louisa starts to believe she can experience the happiness she had given up on. But it soon becomes apparent that neither of them can outrun their violent past.

Original tale of lost souls

This is the second book I have read from this author (the first was The Poison Tree - another good read) and once again she delivers a brilliant tale full of twists and fascinating characters. I particularly loved her depiction of the eighties through to the modern day. This is a story that bounces backwards and forwards but this is well signposted so is not confusing. I can't wait to read more from Erin Kelly.

Another killer thriller

Really enjoyable, another fabulous book from Erin Kelly.
I usually HATE books that fly back and forth in time, but I've come to forgive Kelly as she uses this device so well, making the reader gradually sew the patches of the past and present together.
Some twists as ever. I wasn't paying attention right at the end as I was already in shock... totally didn't see that little surprise coming!

Another stunning work

A brilliantly constructed novel with intrigue right to the last line. Unpredictable twists and turns by completely believable characters. A wonderfully British read.

Slow burn and confusing timeline

I got as far as, Chapter 10 but struggled to patch the threads of the story together and nearly gave up.

.It apoears to have all the ingredients I enjoy, interesting characters in an unusual setting with a who dunnit lurking in the background, but somehow it is not coming together for me. We are skipping around in time and place like a bad dream even though tbe prose is great.

By chapter 20, I started to get more involved but continued to find it hard going despite the kyrical writing and good narration.
