Publisher's Summary

Like threads of delicate gold, the lives of two young Italian lovers, Enza Ravanelli, a practical girl born into poverty, and Ciro Amadei, a dreamer raised in a convent orphanage, are woven together in this lush, epic novel set against the landscape of world events in the first half of the twentieth century. Like the times they were born into, Enza and Ciro's story is filled with surprising twists and turns. Together, they embrace the promise of a new and better life as they attempt to survive by the labour of their own hands.

    "Lovely story"
Where does The Shoemaker's Wife rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I've listened to 100s of audio books but don't always listen to them again. I will listen again to the The Shoemakers Wife as I really enjoyed the way the story flowed to and fro each of the lead characters.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Ciro Amadei is the character who links the whole story together. Although you wait to find out how Enza & Ciro will finally get together you know at some point they will and she will become the main character

Which scene did you most enjoy?

I enjoyed the scene where Ciro approached Enza as she was about to get married as you knew then a new chapter in their life was about to start

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I broke the story into bit size chunks so I had something to look forward to when I could next listen to it.

    Any additional comments?

I look forward to listening to more audio stories from Adriana Trigiani

"Slow to start but do keep listening"
Where does The Shoemaker's Wife rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

    In the top 25%

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Shoemaker's Wife?

I cried for about the last hour ... what a confession. But by then I was so involved in the story I was incredibly moved. But don't be put off by that.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Hard to say really, it was the story of lives evolving I was held once I got into it. If I picked a scene I might give the story away.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Oh yes, I laughed, and at the end I cried. A lot!

    Any additional comments?

Really well narrated. In the whole book there was only one place where I noticed the narration rather than the story, which after all shows that she did a brilliant job.
I wouldn't say I read romance stories, well at least not anything too pink and fluffy. But this is about peoples lives, the stories of two families and that of emigration / immigration. The twists and turns of fate.
Not an oh wow book to start with and you do need to pay attention to the unfamiliar names of the cast of characters, but with all slow burners it is well worth it to keep going. A beautifully written book.

    "A charming, story"
Would you listen to The Shoemaker's Wife again? Why?

No, I would rather read it because I found the narrator annoying.

What did you like best about this story?

I loved the characters and the descriptions of the settings - I was transported into the Italian Alps and I loved it!

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Her Italian accents were annoying. She mispronounced quite a few words which I thought was really irritating.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I cried in quite a few of the sad bits - I had fallen in love with the main character, Ciro.

    Any additional comments?

I would highly recommend the book as it is a really lovely story.
