Summary

Amy Harper Bellafonte is six years old, and her mother thinks she's the most important person in the whole world. She is.... Anthony Carter doesn't think he could ever be in a worse place than Death Row.... He's wrong. FBI agent Brad Wolgast thinks something beyond imagination is coming.... It is. The Passage.

Deep in the jungles of eastern Colombia, Professor Jonas Lear has finally found what he's been searching for - and wishes to God he hadn't. In Memphis, Tennessee, a six-year-old girl called Amy is left at the convent of the Sisters of Mercy and wonders why her mother has abandoned her.

In a maximum security jail in Nevada, a convicted murderer called Giles Babcock has the same strange nightmare, over and over again, while he waits for a lethal injection. In a remote community in the California mountains, a young man called Peter waits for his beloved brother to return home - so he can kill him. Bound together in ways they cannot comprehend, for each of them a door is about to open into a future they could not have imagined.

And a journey is about to begin. An epic journey that will take them through a world transformed by man's darkest dreams, to the very heart of what it means to be human. And beyond. The Passage.

excellent

I struggled to get going with this but ended up loving it. The world building in this book for me was amazing and made it so memorable.
This is a massive trilogy which I am so looking forward to getting involved in and can already see it being one of my greats.

This is not buffy

I really enjoyed listening to The Passage, and yes you should believe the hype. I'm not the biggest fan of this kind of literature, I think the vampire theme in a lot of novels is wearing a little thin, however what saves this book is the awesome writing. Although this is Justin Cronin's first bestseller, from what I have read he has been a writer for some time and this really shows in this novel. The character's are really interesting and his descriptions of their surroundings are well carved out which really does make it a page turner. His writing actually reminds me a lot of Stephen King. In all my reviews I feel it important to mention the narrator as I think this can make or break an audiobook- the narrators in The Passage are excellent, it is a long book and the main narrator doesn't lose pace once, he also has a really great tone to his voice, hard to describe but perfect for this kind of novel.
Certainly worth a listen if you appreciate good writing, good narration and a good old fashioned zombie theme!

Magnificent sprawling masterpiece

Where does The Passage rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It is easily in the top three audiobooks I've ever owned or listened to.

What other book might you compare The Passage to, and why?

It's difficult to compare The Passage to anything else simply because of the way it was written, the narration and the direction the book takes which is usually not where you expect or want the book to go.

Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I listened to Blade Runner (Do androids dream of electric sheep) and I wasn't expecting much. Scott Brick tends to have a depressed, low key style which didn't lend itself well to Blade Runner, mainly because that story is already too down beat. However, it worked perfectly for this story and its sprawling nature.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There is a moment in the book that particularly moved me. It's near the end and it's a character's sacrific. However, anymore information than that would spoil the plot for others.

Any additional comments?

I love the fact that this book is long, complicated and contains a huge number of characters, slang and takes place over large areas of the the US across a long period of time. Even the sequel couldn't live up to the sprawling nature of the this book. Utterly wonderful and always one of my first recommendations to people thinking of joining Audible.

Engaging

The Passage is a completely different type of story to what I usually listened to. I found the way it was read very engaging and the story captures you from the start with you not knowing what will happen next. I thoroughly enjoyed it, Justin Cronin has an incredible imagination.

a long listen but well worth it in the end

It took me a while to get through this, such a vast story with multiple characters, each with their own story.

felt a bit lacking in excitement around the middle section but builds to an amazing finale with enough questions answered, some new ones raised, and a healthy dose of action to reward you.

Unforgettable

Comparable in scale and narrative to Stephen King's The Stand - a book I never thought would be rivalled. Make sure you read this. The narrator is fantastic too.

This book is too incredible to describe!

If you are thinking of purchasing this audiobook. DO NOT HESITATE! It is perfectly written, perfectly narrated and can provide hours upon hours upon hours of one intense, insanely, awesome journey. Thank you and well done Justin Cronin! And well done Scott Brick, Adenrele Ojo and Abby Craden. This book is narrated so fantastically I felt like I was there the entire time. I felt like I was the unmentioned person of the group in this amazing tale. :)

Buy it. You won't regret it.
