Summary

Amy Harper Bellafonte is six years old, and her mother thinks she's the most important person in the whole world. She is.... Anthony Carter doesn't think he could ever be in a worse place than Death Row.... He's wrong. FBI agent Brad Wolgast thinks something beyond imagination is coming.... It is. The Passage.

Deep in the jungles of eastern Colombia, Professor Jonas Lear has finally found what he's been searching for - and wishes to God he hadn't. In Memphis, Tennessee, a six-year-old girl called Amy is left at the convent of the Sisters of Mercy and wonders why her mother has abandoned her.

In a maximum security jail in Nevada, a convicted murderer called Giles Babcock has the same strange nightmare, over and over again, while he waits for a lethal injection. In a remote community in the California mountains, a young man called Peter waits for his beloved brother to return home - so he can kill him. Bound together in ways they cannot comprehend, for each of them a door is about to open into a future they could not have imagined.

And a journey is about to begin. An epic journey that will take them through a world transformed by man's darkest dreams, to the very heart of what it means to be human. And beyond. The Passage.

Great

I loved the beginning of this book, which seems to be divided into about 5 sections of 7 hour segments, found the second section hard to get into, however once I was, it was very good, rolled along and kept me interested. Little disapointed by the last 5 minutes. Overall...loved it.

Excellent story...shame about the ending

I loved this story...right up until the last few chapters. The story is fresh and interesting, the characters and setting interesting, and the narration excellent. But, in my personal opinion, the ending was terrible. There was a 'spiritual' undertone throughout the story, which turned into preaching towards the end. Disappointed, but enjoyed the epic tale for the most part.

Wow!

Well this was a first for me, lets try a horror story I thought, I can't stand to watch horror movies but to listen to it would be entirely different. It was brilliant, totally absorbing and thought provoking, I really felt that this story was plausible. The narrator was superb, yes it's long but everytime I finished a part I couldn't wait for the next one.

The ending is ... well I won't spoil it but I really hope like a previous reviewer, that this will be the first book in a trilogy - just great!

Don’t let the length of this epic put you off!

This was a tremendous listen: gripping, extremely well-written and read - reminiscent of many post-apocalyptic yarns, yet refreshingly unpredictable and with a style all of its own. Yes, 36 hours is a long book - for the first of a trilogy! - but it’s worthwhile. Characters are consistent and credible, and the dialogue and descriptive passages are very well-observed. In short, nothing detracts from the compelling storyline...

Extraordinary and absorbing

Where does The Passage rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

No. 1 definitely! I became totally immersed in the story and went on to read the two sequels.Reading the last book left me saddened, like saying goodbye to old friends.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Passage?

Difficult to pick one without giving away the story. Brad and Amy making snow angels stayed with me. The happiness found in the simplest of things.

Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favourite?

Amy and Alicia. Both strong, both complex but entirely different. There were so many well written female characters. No feeble, hankie grabbing, fainting damsels in this book!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The loneliness of both Amy and the virals. Heartbreaking in places. They had no choice in what they became and were left searching for themselves. Asking over and over "who am I?"

Any additional comments?

Wonderful, beautifully written, emotional book. The horror only heightened by the humanity of the "monsters". Didn't want the story to end.

Great narrators!

Great book, thoroughly enjoyed the narration! Not at all predictable. The characters developed well in the story.

A good post-apocalypse but LONG

Story
This is very similar, in its epic proportions, host of characters and length, to Stephen King's "The Stand". In fact, aside from a less deadly and more vampiric virus, I was continuously reminded of it. I did listen to the end, gripped and enjoying it, despite or perhaps because of, the obscene length. I felt that part one had a good building of pace and tension which then took a while to return in part two. I liked some of the main characters, although none of them had quite the depth; particularly the mysterious Amy. I was a bit annoyed that this wasn't a stand alone novel as I'm not sure I want put in this time again. But certainly, for a apocalyptic nightmare - it's a good as they get these days.

Performance
I took a while to warm to the reader who sound like he's reading the bible at times. There were moments where he gives this quavering emotion that feels a bit out of place. Generally though, pretty good.

The best audio book so far.

I was looking for a lengthy listen to get into and stumbled across this book. it had a good star rating so thought I would give it a go.
after the first hour I was absolutely hooked.
After about 10 hrs I decided to read some reviews other readers and listeners had submitted.
It was the usual, a real mixed bag but the overall impression I got was that many people felt the 1st half was great and the second half was not so good. (bearing in mind this is a 39 hour audio book.)
My own opinion is that the 1st half is probably the best story I have ever heard. It got me emotionally on different many levels. The second half is only awesome!
this is a book of two halves but that is just the way the story goes. It captured my imagination at ever listen and I felt like I travelled with all the characters. Beautifully written and excellently narrated. Cannot wait to start on book 2.

Captivating

Wow. This story was not what I expected. It was so much more, and I'm glad I chose this book, purely by accident of course. Now I can't wait for the next book 📚
