Fascinating and superb story telling

An extremely penetrating examination of a marriage. The structure of the novel leaves you wanting to revisit it immediately. I was a big fan of EJH since coming across the Cazalet novels and although this is a slightly more bleak take it demonstrates her superb empathy with characters yet again.

Marred by incorrect chapter breaks.

I'm enjoying the story - and it lives up to my expectations of Elizabeth Jane Howard from having read the Cazalet series.
What's letting this down, though, is that the chapter breaks aren't the same as the book's chapters. So part way through audible's chapter 1, you hear the announcement for Chapter 2 & then 3. Audible's break comes somewhere in the middle of chapter 3. Looking on the Amazon site & 'look inside' for the book, there are 37 chapters; this has 12. It's obviously the whole book, as the chapters are all about 1 hour 12 minutes - which would make up the 14 or so listed above.
It's just a bit frustrating if you like to, as I do, set the sleep timer to 'end of chapter'.

Other than that, it's good. Would have 5/5 for all sections if the chapter breaks were correct.

Fantastic.... So pleased I persevered ...

Extraordinarily affecting.... I did find the beginning difficult - the characters seemingly so estranged from each other and themselves.... But slowly EJH describes the events that have brought them to this place....

Interesting methodology!

It's unusual to find a book written backwards but it soon grows on the reader (listener) to the extent of providing emotional insight which may not be evident the right way round. EJH has a gift for displaying the most raw emotions and does not let us down!

Enjoyable, but needed perseverance

This is a long and very detailed account of the marriage of 2 people. It's a story of its time, which I found quite hard to relate to. The main female character is likeable and sensible, but she allowed men to make big and small decisions about her life. Men paid for meals and talked about "what women want" as if women were all the same. We were told that they were very much in love at the start of their relationship, but it wasn't obvious what they liked about each other and there didn't seem to be much sympathy between them. Somewhere in the middle, I felt that I really didn't care what happened to these characters and nearly gave up, but I am glad I continued to the end. And then I listened to the beginning again to hear it in the context of the whole.

Mary Wimbush's reading was excellent.

Not up to usual standard

A bit disjointed. Hard to follow at times. Love her other books. Will still read

very uneventful. was expecting so much more. language was lovely but the story was very dull and the narrative oddly constructed which didn't work at all for me.

Disappointing

I loved the Cazalet chronicles so I chose this book after a favourable review but although there were snippets of the superb writing that characterises Ms Howard, the plot felt so dated. I also found the fact that the book went backwards in time, rather than forward disconcerting. The narration was good and in keeping with the period but the book as a whole was very long-winded and I could not really relate to any of the characters.
