Summary

The Liberation is set in Italy in 1945 as British and American troops attempt to bring order to the devastated country and Italy's population fights to survive.

Caterina Lombardi is desperate - her father is dead, her mother has disappeared, and her brother is being drawn toward danger. One morning, among the ruins of the bombed Naples streets, Caterina is forced to go to extreme lengths to protect her own life and in doing so forges a future in which she must clear her father's name. An Allied Army officer accuses him of treason, and Caterina discovers a plot against her family. Who can she trust, and who is the real enemy now? And will the secrets of the past be her downfall?

This epic novel is an unforgettably powerful story of love, loss, and the long shadow of war.

Enjoyable tale, well told

A good measure of politics and intrigue, this book gives up it's secrets at an engaging pace. It took me a while to settle into the narrator's style but she did an admirable job of portraying the different characters.

Excellent all round

An excellently written story, brilliantly read and perfectly paced. As a frequent visitor to the city, I very much enjoyed being taken back to post-war Naples and seeing how so much of what happened then, shapes the Naples of today.

Just about worth persevering with the irritating narration.

A great adventure story full of larger than life characters and action. The narration style takes a lot of getting used to! The narrator’s voice sounds on the edge of tears most of the time which is irritating until you get used to it.

Italia

This book is filled with descriptions that fill your senses, giving you a taste of an Italy torn apart by fascism, war and its aftermath. Intertwined through a tale of greed and corruption is a love story that carries the listener along, impatient to hear what happens next, yet not wanting the story the end. With excellent narration by Imogen Church, I cannot recommend highly enough

I've looked at Sorrento as a holiday destination

The descriptions of the areas were wonderful the story managed to capture post war struggles and be predictable sweet with a twist.

A glimpse of Italy after the war

Although I enjoyed the book I found it too descriptive many times. Sometimes it was necessary and painted a picture of sorrento and Naples after the war, however the writer didn’t leave the reader the opportunity to think for themselves. It therefore was a bit slow in places.

Average read/listen

I persevered to the end despite the narration grating my ears. I felt the narrator was trying to act out the story with the heavy accents which detracted from my enjoyment. The story was ok but does not encourage me to read more by the author

Not a bad story but not a fabulous one either.

This started of an okay tale although I did struggle with the 'forced' accents. I gave up 3/4 of the way through but I have just finished it at last.
