Summary

The Left Hand of God is a stunning first installment in a remarkable epic trilogy...

"Listen. The Sanctuary of the Redeemers on Shotover Scarp is named after a damned lie for there is no redemption that goes on there and less sanctuary."

The Sanctuary of the Redeemers is a vast and desolate place - a place without joy or hope. Most of its occupants were taken there as boys and for years have endured the brutal regime of the Lord Redeemers whose cruelty and violence have one singular purpose - to serve in the name of the One True Faith.

In one of the Sanctuary's vast and twisting maze of corridors stands a boy. He is perhaps fourteen or fifteen years old - he is not sure and neither is anyone else. He has long-forgotten his real name, but now they call him Thomas Cale. He is strange and secretive, witty and charming, violent and profoundly bloody-minded. He is so used to the cruelty that he seems immune, but soon he will open the wrong door at the wrong time and witness an act so terrible that he will have to leave this place, or die.

His only hope of survival is to escape across the arid Scablands to Memphis, a city the opposite of the Sanctuary in every way: breathtakingly beautiful, infinitely Godless, and deeply corrupt.

But the Redeemers want Cale back at any price... not because of the secret he now knows but because of a much more terrifying secret he does not.

Great book, brilliantly read.

Fantastic book, superbly read, I couldn't get enough of the story. Keep looking for the next installment but as the book isn't published until April will probably have to wait a while longer.
Highly reccommend this book, although sometimes the descriptions might be a bit much for younger listeners.

Dark, powerful & funny

I loved this book! From the start to the finish it was really engrossing - right up my street. I'd say it was definitely a bit of a boys book - it can be a bit much at times! But that's kind of what I liked about it. Its one of those books that leaves an impression on you for sure.

The Left Hand of God

Enjoyed this book, however....
I could accept a description of the battle of Agincourt, although Bernard Corwell's is better BUT... to use Solomon Ballou's last letter to his wife, is unforgivable.
(Google, Solomon Ballow last letter and weep)

Captivating

I'm not normally drawn to fantasy books with the exception of the odd Terry Pratchett but I was riveted by this story.

I liked the hero's no nonsense approach to violence.

I'm looking forward to further instalments.

Good teen-quality excapism

Without such superb narration, I would have sent this back before getting half way. I felt that it was on the margin of implausibility throughout but with enough intelligence that it just kept me believing - except for one incident which seemed to be an absurd failure of logic. I will describe it in a way which won't be a spoiler.

A has captured B and wants to set up C to take the responsibility. So A asks C to write a letter to B that will enable A to make the capture. The problem is that C has no clue of B's whereabouts and has to give the letter to A to deliver. Well that's just ridiculous. If A can deliver the letter, A doesn't need a letter to get to B, and that should be obvious to C. Well, duh, apparently not.

I quite enjoyed the book as light entertainment but, after seeing that the reviews for the sequels are more critical, I am undecided whether to keep going.

Just ok

It okay if a little flat not entirely engaging its like the characters are one dimensional so it's hard to care about the outcome

Shows well but superficial environments

One of the few fantasy which show things instead of telling and telling about other people doing other things elsewhere. The problem is that doesn't go deep enough in building a believable context for such a story

A good story once you get into it.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this to a friend but with a warning, I'm not sure what it was but it took me 3 attempts to get through this book.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Left Hand of God?

The last 4 chapters of this book were the best, really set up well for the sequel.

Which character – as performed by Sean Barrett – was your favourite?

My favourite character of the book was Thomas kale.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not really no.

Any additional comments?

It's a slog but the series is good, and well worth a listen, it's not you're typical fantasy story that's for sure. The reasons which don't become a parang till the very last book, and the. It's only vaguely alluded to with a strange forward.
