Editor reviews

Jonas Jonasson’s charming novel The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared tells the story of Allan Karlsson, who has just turned 100 and is desperate to escape his own birthday party. On the run from the old people’s home in his slippers, Allan soon is swept into an adventure involving a suitcase stuffed with money, murder victims, villains and police. As the narrative unfolds, we discover more of Allan’s Forrest Gump-like background, having worked on the Manhattan Project, befriended heads of state and had a hand in many of the momentous events of the twentieth century. This delightful audiobook is narrated by Peter Kenny and available for download from Audible.

Summary

Sitting quietly in his room in an old people's home, Allan Karlsson is waiting for a party he doesn't want to begin: his 100th birthday party. Escaping through his bedroom window, into the flowerbed, Allan makes his getaway. And so begins his picaresque and unlikely journey involving criminals, several deaths, a suitcase full of cash, and incompetent but very human police. As his escapades unfold, Allan's earlier life is revealed, and we discover that he played a key role behind the scenes in some of the momentous events of the 20th century.

This ‘imaginative, laugh-out-loud bestseller’ (Daily Telegraph) has sold more than two million printed copies.

Critic reviews

“Like Forrest Gump, Allan is an innocent with the knack of being in the right place at the right time. He has had a hand in everything from the Russian revolution to Reagan's Star Wars. Like Allan, the plot is pleasingly nimble and the book's endearing charm offers a happy alternative to the more familiar Nordic noir.” ( The Guardian)
"a mordantly funny and loopily freewheeling debut novel about ageing ¬disgracefully, [full of] infectious humour and crackpot energy. The author has ... an acute ear for dialogue and a brilliant eye for the absurd." ( Sunday Times)
“Peter Kenny...reads with the straightness [the book's] dry humour requires ... I guarantee there will be a smile on your face when you hear it.” (Christina Hardyment, The Times)

I couldn't believe how good it was

I was put off by the name and the description, and thought I'd make a mistake in buying it on the basis of all the good reviews. However, it is simply enchanting and I'm so sad to have finished it. But I will go back to it as it is the sort of book that you will want to return to. And the narration is just perfect.

A charming and humorous tale, brilliantly told.

A wonderful tale of a centenarian who, like a cat, always seems to land on his feet! The ebb and flow of his life is cleverly interwoven into many pivotal moments of the 20th century.

Charming, funny and with a moral undercurrent this is in to top few of the 30 or so audiobooks I own. Recommended.

One of the best books I've ever read or listened to.

It stands alone.

What does Peter Kenny bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

he sounds like he's smiling while in a matter of fact way.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

when this rag tag group of mis-fits became a kind of family.

An amazing old man's adventure , funny & engaging

Lovely story, you become as laid back as the main character, enjoying all his adventures and get lost completely in his amazing past. Couldn't put this down, enjoyed very word!

A Charming Farce

I seem to be about the only person on Audible who hadn't heard about this - I only actually noticed it because of the sequel being released! It's really genuinely charming. If you're trying to imagine how you write an eleven hour book about a 100 year man then you're approaching it the same way I did.

As it happens Jonas had an idea or two up his sleeve and delivers two narratives: the current adventure of the 100 year old man and the sidekicks he picks up on the way and a look back at the rather explosive impact our hero had on world events as a younger man. There are a lot of very funny moments and ridiculous situations that are cleverly engineered. The writing style is very simple and Peter Kenny's deadpan delivery seems to suit it very well.

It's something different and I am glad that I eventually managed to find it!

Jackanory for grown ups

Wonderful! A story where ego, malice, conscience and overt sex is removed....leaving a tawdry tale spanning (strangely) 100 years of history, hiccups and hellraising narrated in the most loving, dulcet and calming tones. I found myself giggling naughtily in the car, hoping no one around could see me, or if they did, they didn't have an account on YouTube.

Forrest Gump on vodka

A fun story that probably has deep meaning but was for me, just an enjoyable romp. Might be a little long - every loose end is tied up. But Alan influences world events while dispatching unfortunate gang members in his slippers - and that was good enough to keep me listening to the end.

An amazing audible experience

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This is the first audio book I've been 'addicted' to in the way we get addicted to printed books - I couldn't put it down. I was listening in the car and found myself looking forward to my journey so I could listen to the next installment

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared?

There are so many scenes in the book that I think will stay with me for a long time but the most memorable has to be when the lead character decides he has been held in a Russian Gulag camp for long enough and hatches a plan to leave - just incredible listening!

Which character – as performed by Peter Kenny – was your favourite?

As the plot unfolds the number of key characters increases until the main group are 5 or 6 strong. I particularly liked 'The Beauty', Benny, the Police Chief and of course Allan himself

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

It would have to be "what will be will be", Allan's mantra whenever he gets into a scrape of any sort and which see's him through everything very well indeed
