It is 1855 and William May has returned to London from the battlefields of the Crimea, devastated by the horrors he has suffered on the front line. Back home with his wife and young son, disoriented by the chaos and clamour of the burgeoning city, May tries to rebuild his life. When he secures a job with Bazalgette to transform the city's sewer system, he believes it will prove his salvation. But this subterranean world hides its own terrible secrets and, when a violent murder is committed, a parallel world unfolds beneath London's streets that will bring May ever closer to the edge of his own destruction...

Really love the way this one is written, its my first Clare Clark and was a complete impulse download not planned just picked at random one day. So pleased I have had the pleasure of listening to this one, the characters are powerful and very likeable brought to life by the extremely talented Steven Crossley, especially Tom and Lady. The way this one reads its like a book within a book and its not all about poo and other smelly stuff as you might think, there is a lot of background to underground London which is very interesting, the characters and their stories are what make this one special. Well worth the download I was captivated throughout and did not want to miss any, if my mind did start to wander I paused the book so that I did not miss any of the narration. 5 stars and a huge thumbs up from me
"I wish I was warned!!!!"
SO SO SO SO SO SO SO disturbing!!!! *shiver* The synopsis did not elude to just what the 'darkness' was at all! I was bamboozled! Has I known, I would have skipped it.
This is not a spoiler, it's a warning if you are squeemish like me: the main character is a cutter and the author is very descriptive.
