Summary

Hildy Good has reached that dangerous time in a woman’s life - middle-aged and divorced, she is an oddity in her small but privileged town. But Hildy isn’t one for self-pity and instead meets the world with a wry smile, a dark wit, and a glass or two of Pinot Noir. When her two earnest grown-up children stage ‘an intervention’ and pack Hildy off to an addiction centre, she thinks all this fuss is ridiculous. After all, why shouldn’t she enjoy a drink now and then? But we start to see another side to Hildy Good.

Good story but poor choice of narrator

I found this a gripping story in the end, but initially, the narrator put me off. I don’t understand why a young woman was chosen as the narrator of a tale that is written from the point of view of a 60 year old woman. It was a very jarring experience to hear the words of a mature woman spoken by such a young sounding voice. Not only that, but it was as if the narrator tried to make the protagonist (a successful and savvy mature woman) sound simpering and saccharine sweet - it didn’t fit the story at all and it sounded contrived. I couldn’t deal with the reedy sound of the narrator in addition to this.

The plot was engaging, so I don’t want to knock it too much. I just wish a mature woman had narrated this audiobook.
