Summary

The wonderful new novel from the Man Booker Prize shortlisted author of The Glass Room is both a gripping adventure story and a moving meditation on patriotism, betrayal and the limits of love.

Marian Sutro is an outsider: the daughter of a diplomat, half French, half British, naive yet too clever for her own good. But when she is recruited from her desk job by SOE to go undercover in wartime France, it seems her hybrid status - and fluent French - will be of service to a greater, more dangerous cause. Trained in sabotage, dead-drops, how to perform under interrogation, and how to kill, Marian parachutes into southwest France with an urgent mission....

Critic reviews

"The Girl Who Fell from the Sky comes from a long and glorious tradition of spy novels that you just can't put down. It's taut fiction at it's best." (Stylist)

Loads of intrigue

Ever wonder what goes on in a spy's head? This historical thriller gives a pretty good account. Spine-tingling and also emotional... this story has both plot and character development. Oh... and some good twists!

Predictable and Meh

After reading some great reviews I was disappointed as I found the story cliched and the writing quite repetitive. I thought the male author had a particularly hard time putting himself in a woman's mind and so the main character remaining unconvincing and ditzy.... All followed by an annoying and ridiculous ending. I won't be listening to the second instalment which is a shame as historically it's such a fascinating subject.

very disappointing

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

I can't think of anyone who would find this book exciting, perhaps if you've never read le Carre.......Gerald Seymour....or William Boyd you might find this book interesting and exciting! .....but I think not!

What will your next listen be?

I'm going to re-listen to CJ Sanson's Dominion.......

Would you listen to another book narrated by Anna Bentinck?

Probably.....the narration was OK

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

No.......

Any additional comments?

Many of my audio books I have listened to a second time, and enjoyed them all over again!......but not this one.....I'm returning it!

Hero of war from the skies

I picked this book up as recommended by Richard and Judy's book club.
I thought the narration was interesting and helped bring the story to life.
It was really informative reading about the hidden heroes of World War 2 and how they were trained deployed etc and the fact that the main character was bilingual and how her language skills were checked brought the story more interest.
I felt though that the story lacked depth and it seemed like the character was on the fringes of the story rather than deep within it. The conflicts with her love interests did not really fit well for me. I could see the dilemma but failed to be really interested by it. The ending was good I will say.
When I compare this to other works of a similar vein for example Restless by William Boyd it pales in comparison, and does not even come close. It was a nice read but not very memorable for me.

Disappointing

Found this disappointing and am surprised it had so many good reviews. I felt the narrative and characters both lacked depth and although the narration started out well, the accents all quite authentic, the narrator lost her footing about half way through the book and a twinge of Australian started seeping into her English accents. I found it so distracting that a few times I missed entire sentences because I was too busy being bewildered.

Superb story totally spoiled by the ending

I listened to this book non-stop - it was an excellent story, well conceived - but the ending spoiled it completely. The choice she made was so unlikely but at the same time completely banal. Pity!

Terrible ending

I enjoyed nine tenths of this book - the final tenth being the terrible and completely unconvincing end. Had I known this was the case I would never have started it. A great shame as the rest was interesting if hardly great literature. I listened to it whilst cleaning the house - that's about its level. Having finished it now, I won't be trying any of her other books.

translation of a girl to a femme

Marianne Sutrow evolves as fully as the achievement new persona she inhabits takes her deeper into the world of espionage. Throughout the novel one is challenged to imagine how, after each experience, she might return, but as the complexities of her involvement heighten how could she retrace her steps to safety, to innocence, to herself. Magnificently realised. Satisfying to the last word.

Author obviously a little too fixated with his heroine

It would have been better without the impression he only had one hand on his keyboard while writing.

Wartime action In France

Well written, atmospheric, one is inside the head of a beautiful brave girl. Fascinating. Characters well drawn. Pacy action.
