Publisher's Summary

1950s Liverpool. In the tight-knit community of the Four Streets, two girls are growing up. One is motherless and hated by the cold woman determined to take her dead mother's place. The other is hiding a dreadful secret which she dare not tell to anyone. The people of Four Streets laugh, grieve and hope together. But what can they do when a betrayal at the heart of their world comes to light?

    Story
"a moment in time, vividly told with passion"
Would you listen to The Four Streets again? Why?

I listened to it over a 24 hour period, every chance I could, I couldn't leave it alone, I will have to not listen for a while so I hopefully forget some of the story first, it was really vivid and very well read.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Four Streets?

The woman gathering together to cook a huge stew so all the kids would eat that night when times were hard. Many moments spring to mind

Which character – as performed by Emma Gregory – was your favourite?

I didn't have one favourite, the characters were really well drawn, I felt most for Nellie and Jerry her dad

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

something that I wasn't expecting, a moment of forgiveness, compassion and understanding for someone in terrible emotional pain, i cant say when without giving away a huge chunk of the story.

    Any additional comments?

I loved this, I was dreading to reach the end, the characters were so real and I wanted the story to go on and on. A story I would recommend to anyone who loves this kind of near historical (within my lifetime) community tale of how things were

    "Not for the faint hearted!"

The story is intriguing however way way way too graphic in parts! The detail in the abuse scenes is far too excessive, I struggled to keep going with the book as I found these scenes deeply disturbing,. I understand it is the major part of the story line, however I felt the description of abuse could have been covered much more sensitively. Had I realised the disturbing topic of the book, I doubt I would have read it. I don't recall this being in the description of the book. A brilliant story spoilt by unnecessary details..

I am a regular busy 50 something woman who really loves being able to listen to great stories while I am walking the dog or working at home.

"Good story but some very difficult parts to listen"

I loved Angela's Ashes and thought this would be in the same style.
But whilst it was a good story i found some of the content so uncomfortable and had to move forward a chapter. Also thought the book ended in a strange way but all things considered. The story of the relationships of the Irish families was brilliant.

Too stereotypical, too predictable, the only thing that gave me pleasure was to delete it from my library!

    "A Tale of Reality"

Perfect story of the reality of living in times gone by. I was hooked from beginning to end. The descriptions of life in the four streets was really realistic and I am now eager to start the next book in the series.

    Story
"Poverty, Humour, Love, Sex, Death, Scandal!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, provided they had previously enjoyed other historical, family drama poverty stricken tales, family stories etc.... Otherwise no. If you don't like that genre, then this one won't change your mind.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Four Streets?

Some of the moments were emotional and shocking.... Some of them a bit far fetched.

What does Emma Gregory bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Emma Gregory's accents are great, her Irish and Liverpudlian accents bring a lot to the narrative....

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    Love Flourishes in Bleak Circumstances

    Any additional comments?

I enjoyed this book, and will carry on to read the others in the series, but I didn't rush onto the 2nd one, I felt I needed a break in between continuing the story... this perhaps doesn't sound too positive, but overall I did enjoy it. I just needed a rest from the Blarney!
