For more than a decade, two East End families have been locked in a bitter war. On one side are the Mitchells, a notorious underworld mob from East London's Canning Town. They have an iron in every fire and will resort to intimidation and violence to get what they want. When Stanley Smith's lovely young daughter, Jessica, announces that she is to marry Eddie, the son of mob boss Harry Mitchell, Stanley is horrified, but too afraid to stand in their way.
On the other side are the O'Haras. The Mitchells' biggest rivals are a travelling family who live in nearby Stratford. They compete with the Mitchells for pub protection and the two families hate each other.
Caught between these two families at war are two innocent children, who will grow up to love the wrong people and spark the last terrible act in the long-running feud.
A happy year in many people's lives, some called 1988 The Rave Year, others The Second Summer of Love. For Eddie Mitchell and his family, it is neither. It is the year in which his whole dangerous, violent world explodes around him.

Listening to this has me hooked on audiobooks, as a mum of three I find it hard to find time to sit and read a book so with audiobooks I can listen as I work. This is a fantastic story bought to life by the narrator.
A definite for any Martina Cole fans.Cant wait to hear the other two books in series.
Loved the story and Annie Adlington narrating is as good as ever...downloaded The Traitor within 10 mins of this story ending! Cannot wait to listen to it!
very disappointed with this book considering the reviews, cliched dialogue and storyline. The impression overall was that the writing was very amateurish and the storyline predictable
This is the first Kimberley Chambers book for me and I have throughly enjoyed it and cannot wait for the next instalment of the Mitchell's and the O'Hara's saga. If you are a fan of Martina Cole you will most certainly enjoy Kimberley Chambers. I honestly thought there would ever be anyone to match Martina Cole how wrong was I.
NETTIE Love a good horror. Love Martina Cole and simular. Love Annie Aldington as the narrator
I really enjoyed this book.
Some of the dry sense of humour remarks at times, had me laughing out loud.
I've already downloaded 2 and 3 and can't wait to start listening.
I love all these type of books as they take me back to my childhood in the east end.
