Publisher's Summary

'I charge you, Sir Alan Dale, with administering my death. At the end of the game, I would rather die by your hand than any other.'

England rebels. War rages across the land. In the wake of Magna Carta, King John's treachery is revealed, and the barons rise against him once more. Fighting with them is the Earl of Locksley - the former outlaw Robin Hood - and his right-hand man, Sir Alan Dale.

France invades. When the French enter the fray, with the cruel White Count leading the charge, Robin and Alan must decide where their loyalties lie: with those who would destroy the king and seize his realm or with the beloved land of their birth.

A hero lives forever. Fate is inexorable, and Death waits for us all. Or does it? Can Robin Hood pull off his greatest ever trick and cheat the Grim Reaper one last time just as England needs him most?

The climactic episode of The Outlaw Chronicles is the most explosive yet - but who will survive and who will fall when the final reckoning comes?

"Like losing an old friend !"
Where does The Death of Robin Hood rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

As a series of 8 books these are the best I've listened to... over the past few years I've listened to each book stand alone as they were released but decided to listen to them all again prior to the final installment. It's taken me 3 months but now it's over I can honestly say it's like saying a final goodbye to an old friend

Who was your favorite character and why?

Obviously Alan Dale stands out as he feels part of the listener but Angus Donald did a fantastic job with Robin making him as Swashbuckling as Errol Flyn but as flawed, inhumane yet charismatic as Alan Rickmans Sheriff of Nottingham

Have you listened to any of Mike Rogers’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I've only listened to Mike in relation to this series but what a job he does! He makes every character sound different. His tone and general reading make the books come alive

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

The Real Story of the Legend !

    Any additional comments?

Please do yourself a favour and read these books. You can't help but think this is as close to how Robin and his men really were .....10/10 listens !!

    "Going to miss this series"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes I would. The earlier books had historical accuracy and detail but lacked pace and the first narrator chosen failed to put any spark into the telling. However, as the series progressed the novels improved; maintaining their detail but bringing the characters to life, allowing us to relate and empathise with them, and Mike Rogers does a fantastic job narrating.

What did you like best about this story?

There was a lovely mix of the original legend in with "Outlaw's" unique perspective. It is not a stand-alone tale but is a fitting close to the saga and tribute to the protagonists. I felt quite sad that I would not be hearing any more of Alan and Robin's adventures.

What about Mike Rogers’s performance did you like?

He draws you into the tale bringing the characters to life. His accents and voices are subtle and believable, not heavy-handed caracatures like some. The rythmn of his speach makes you want to keep on listening.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Over the books there have been several moments where the reader really "feels" for the character; moments of excitement, wry smiles, frustration and sadness. The end of this book is the same. There is a sense of unfairness mixed in with pity and sadness, yet also of satisfaction as the legend is laid to rest in the way he should be.

    Any additional comments?

I would recommend starting this series at the beginning and "toughing out" the more pedantic early novels, when Angus Donald finds his stride it is well worth while and the books become an addictive pleasure

"I shall miss Sir Alan and Robin!"

I've now listened to all of Angus Donald's superb 'Robin' series. They are some of the best audiobooks I have had the pleasure of listening to.
Fiction is woven into fact in a quite brilliant manner throughout. Amazing tales with brilliantly evil, great & good characters brought to life by excellent narration.
I was spellbound throughout the whole journey.
Angus is a seriously gifted writer and should be mentioned in a similar light to greats like Bernard Cornwell.
It is rare to feel loss at the end of a series of books, however I'm feeling that right now....

    "The legend lives on!"

A fantastic novel and last in the series (or is it?) of Robin Hood! Angus has a incredible ability which many authors fail to accomplish.....it is easy to make a reader fall in love with a character but it is not easy to make the reader feel every emotion of that character as though the reader is in the story himself! I urge you to read this book and the series! Guarantee you will love it!

"A brilliant end to my favourite series"

I had mixed feelings about listening to the last in the outlaw series as I didn't want it to end. What an excellent way to end my favourite series. It's the characters that really made this story for me. Yes the story lines and scene setting is first class but Angus has made me really care about the characters and what happens to them, as if they are old friends. I will really miss them and will read/listen to the stories again. The sign of a true classic!

"A fitting conclusion blending myth and history"
Would you consider the audio edition of The Death of Robin Hood to be better than the print version?

I have read and listened to all of this series - one thing missing from the audio books is the 'historical notes' I wish these would be included. That said the narrator breathes life into the characters and as most of my listening is done whilst driving I prefer the audio version

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Death of Robin Hood?

Many memorable moments in this book hard to mention without spoiling the plot. I will remember Alan's 'Lone ride home'.

What about Mike Rogers’s performance did you like?

Mike brings a consistence to the characters and has the various accents mastered

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book did bring a tear to the eye but thats to be expected in an end to a long running series. I picked the first book Outlaw up by chance a few years ago and up to that point had not been a fan of the RH legends. However was instantly hooked on the added realism portrayed in these books and will miss Robin and Alan. I plan to re read/listen now.

    Any additional comments?

It was a good ending and I look forward to seeing what comes next from Angus

    "Very Satisfactory Final Book"

This has been a wondrous tale. The narrator gave a word-class performance, and the underlying history of the imaginary tale filled in a lot of gaps.

"Fabulous ending to a fabulous series"

I found each book in the series better than the one before, so it was no surprise to find the finale to be the best of the lot and a superb conclusion to a fine series. I read a ton of historical fiction and found these stories first rate. Kudos also to the narrator!

    "Robin Hood's final adventures!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

If you have read the series, you absolutely have to finish it up!

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Death of Robin Hood?

unfortunately, all of the memorable moments would be spoilers, so I can't reveal them here!

If you could rename The Death of Robin Hood, what would you call it?

Hmmm... the legacy of Robin Hood. Or maybe, How Robin Hood shaped England.

    Any additional comments?

The only reason this gets a four is that once again Alan Dale's contradictory behavior gets really frustrating at times. He knows who Robin is, yet is continuously surprised, disgusted, gets this superior moralistic attitude, then turns around and feels bad and apologizes to him. Then hit repeat. It gets a little old after awhile. But the story is strong enough for me to get past it. It's that well-written

"great end to a great series"

it was bittersweet to say goodbye to Sir Robin of locksley and Sir Alan after all the adventures. Really appreciated the development of the characters, especially Robin, as they ripened into middle-aged men.

    "great ending"

I loved this series and have listened to all of the other novels at least twice. The narrator was good, no complaints. I loved how the the book would lead the reader to beleive that Robin was about to die. I have to say a tear rolled down my eye when Alan was riding back to Westbury and he could see all those he loved that had passed.

    "Great ending"

This has been a remarkable series intertwining historical fiction with the legend of Robin Hood, and the conclusion stood up to the challenge. Perhaps the best in the series (probably a second to that where Robin and Alan find themselves in the middle of the siege of Chateau Gaillard, which is one of my favourite novels period) the author and narrator each do fantastic work and I cannot wait to see where he goes next!

    "A Perfect Conclusion"

Angus Donald brings his saga of the career of Robin Hood, as seen by his good friend Sir Alan Dale, to a perfect conclusion. Historical events, from sieges to battles, are folded into the adventure with skill and the action never lets up as we follow the heroes on their last great campaign. Plots and subplots planted in earlier books are neatly tied up and a few expectations are nicely twisted for the element of surprise, bit in ways that are dramatically satisfying. Donald keeps up a brisk pace throughout and delivers once more on his inspired retelling of a legend. Mike Rogers provides excellent narration and shows a great skill at giving his characters realistic and appropriate dramatic voice and accents. Highly recommended.
