New York Times best-selling author Gena Showalter returns with her most explosive Lords of the Underworld tale to date, about a fierce warrior on the brink of sanity who will stop at nothing to claim the exquisite human with the power to soothe the beast inside him....
Driven to his death by the demon of Distrust, Baden spent centuries in purgatory. Now he's back, but at what cost?
Bound to the king of the underworld, an even darker force, he's unable to withstand the touch of another...and he's quickly devolving into a heartless assassin with an uncontrollable temper. Things only get worse when a mission goes awry and he finds himself saddled with a bride - just not his own.
Famed dog trainer Katarina Joelle is forced to marry a monster to protect her loved ones. When she's taken hostage by the ruthless, beautiful Baden immediately after the ceremony, she's plunged into a war between two evils - with a protector more dangerous than the monsters he hunts.
They are meant to be enemies, but neither can resist the passion burning between them...and all too soon, the biggest threat is to her heart. But as Baden slips deeper into the abyss, she'll have to teach him to love...or lose him forever.

"5 Awesome Bad-en Stars!"
"Steal the box, they said. It'll be fun, they said." ~ Baden
Gena's talent really shines through in the latest addition in the Lords of the Underworld series. The Darkest Torment resonates a slightly dark tone, with an exciting, suspenseful, and passionate plot. As a loyal fan, who has followed this series for years, I was skeptical about the next book in the series being about Baden. But WOW, this story turned out to be one of my favorites in the series! As usual, Gena's weaves in her signature style, and we get plenty of dry humor, action, steamy romance, and plethora of quotes. I actually used the Clip feature and saved my favorite ones!
The story has multiple POV's, and we feel both Baden and Katarina's internal struggles as they slowly transform, and grow feelings for each other. When they finally give into their desires, their relationship ignites and passions flare. Throughout the story, we learn more about Katarina's dog training skills, and as a major dog lover, I really liked how her dog training plays a role in both of their transformations, especially Katarina's.
While the main plot captivated and drew me in, the subplots caught me off guard, and delivered some surprising twists that I didn't see coming. These surprises really have me excited for the next story.
Max Bellmore - The official voice for the Lords of the Underworld delivers another exceptional performance! He has a great voice that fits the male characters perfectly, and uses the right amounts of tones, pitches, and inflections to convey the different emotions throughout the story from the intense fighting, internal demon dialogue, to the really sexy scenes. I've enjoyed Max's narration from the very first book!
Lords of the Underworld is one of my favorite series, and I highly recommend it to any PNR/fantasy fan. Even though these stories are a romance at the core, they have a slightly darker plot, descriptive fight scenes, and a large portion of the multiple POV's are from a male character's perspective, so these stories can easily be enjoyed by everyone!
A couple of quotes from story:
"Your hardest times often lead to your greatest moments. So get hard." ~ William the Ever Randy
"Only one thing should be infectious. Your smile." ~ Torin
"Lords of the Underworld, definite winners." ~ Cheri
"It's over again so soon!?!"
I wait so long on tenterhooks for the next story to come out and then devour it overnight!
The narration was excellent and totally added to the story. And I love the sync feature so I could listen and then pick up right where I left off in the kindle book.
Love, love, love Gena Showalter and her worlds.
"Another sexy warrior to drool over."
Now if you have reached this book in the series, you know what you are in for. So get the book already it is another great addition to the series and you won't regret getting it. If your new to the series get the first one The Darkest Night, this is a series that needs to be read in order. I especially like the hell hounds in this story, although it did remind me a bit of Larissa Ione's Lord of Deliverance series which I love so I was cool with that. Both Baden and Katarina were great characters that I could rally behind and I was glad to be there for the journey. I suspect that William and Jillian's story is coming up and I am not that excited about it. Like with Paris, I'm not a huge fan of William, but it will be interesting to see what happens. I would be perfectly happy if Gena Showalter adds their story in with another couple's book instead of them having their own book. I am looking forward to Misery and Lazarus's book though and maybe even letting Pandora get her own book. The cherry on top for this series is the sexy narrator, I defiantly like listening to him read.
I loved it as always!!! Started and finished within two days, only stopping to sleep!!!
"Great addition to the series :D"
This was a great story and addition to the series. I liked Katarina and Baden and their story was very enjoyable and kept me engaged throughout.
Katarina is a famous dog trainer that got pulled into a bad situation. Katarina's parents are both dead and her only relation is her brother. Unfortunately, Katarina gained an unwanted suited (Alec) that is the head of a drug syndicate. After her brother became Alec's lapdog, he got hooked on heroine and then betrayed Katarina to Alec, allowing Alec to blackmail her into marrying him.
Baden is one of the immortal warriors that were responsible for opening Pandora's box. As a way to imprison the demons and punish the warriors responsible, the greek gods decided that the warriors should act as hosts to the demons. Baden hosted the demon of distrust but got killed centuries ago and ended up in purgatory. Baden was brought back by Hades but is link to him and has a new beast inside him that's worse than his demon was.
Hades used his link to Baden to force him to do tasks for him. Actually, both Baden and Pandora are doing the tasks and for each one completed, they get a point and whomever gets the most points gets freed from Hades' control. One task Baden is given is to steal back a coin of Hades' that's owned by a human. Unfortunately, the coin is well hidden and the human is unwilling to share it's whereabouts so Baden is forced to try something else so he kidnaps Katarina from her wedding, telling Alec he'll get her back in exchange for the coin. Katarina actually tries to get back to Alec because he's holding her precious dogs hostage and she's afraid that if she's taken away, Alec will kill her dogs. Baden thinks that Katarina is just a gold digger that doesn't care how evil her husband is because she just wants his power and money so their first day or 2 together don't go well.
Baden is forced to keep Katarina around longer than he originally planned and he's worried about it. He doesn't want to hurt Katarina and the beast inside him is unpredictable and tends to want to kill anything near it. Things change gradually though and after a few weeks, Baden becomes more used to Katarina and finds himself wanting to be closer to her. Katarina quickly realizes that Baden is very similar to a rescue dog that's been badly abused and uses the methods she uses on her dogs to "train" Baden into better behavior. They find a mutual attraction and that grows into something more, something that was supposed to be temporary but turns into a much deeper and binding relationship than either expected. There's a good amount of action going on to keep things interesting while Katarina and Baden work through their relationship issues and once things are settled (for the time being at least), Katarina and Baden end with a well deserved HEA.
I really enjoyed this story a lot. Katarina was a great heroine and even though she wasn't a warrior chick, she still showed a lot of courage and fortitude. Baden was great and I was so pleased to see him get a happy ending...he deserved it. I was quite happy with both the action and romance plot...they were balanced nicely and blended into a great story that I'd recommend. :)
"Don't waste your credit"
This was the worst book in the series!!! I am not sure what happened. I've liked every other book in this series EXCEPT this one. I want my credit back. This book was boring and confusing. I kept falling asleep on it because it was boring.
"the story is quite similar to Eternal Rider."
the mail female character is a mortal turned immortal by bonding with hell hounds. Same with Eternal Rider's storyline... Though the meeting of the hell hounds and the female character was not as well written as Eternal Rider.
"great narration, great story. "
Gena Showalter never disappoints. her stories are always action packed and hot! the narrator is awesome!
"Hell has no fury"
I loved this story. I found myself laughing st what may have been odd moments. Gena gas done it again.
i truly enjoyed this book and found myself laughing out loud thru a lot of it. the narrator did a fantastic job
