The wall between our world and that of vengeful spirits has protected humanity for more than 400 years. It's about to come crashing down.
Ellie Lancaster has lived her whole life by the site of the mysterious Lost Colony of Roanoke, the Virginia settlement that vanished without a trace around 1590. Ellie is a Curse Keeper, the direct descendant of one of the two men who banished the spirits of a warring tribe from the material realm. The story goes that if the two Curse Keepers ever meet again, the countdown to the death of the curse will begin, the gate will open, and the raging Native American spirits will be unleashed to seek their revenge.
Ellie has always taken the legend for a harmless fairy tale. Until she meets the darkly handsome, but downright infuriating, Collin Dailey and realizes that he is the other Curse Keeper. The prophecy is coming true. Now Ellie and Collin must battle supernatural forces and their loathing - and passion - for each other to set things right.

Couldn't really decide if I liked this or not. It's okay but not brilliant. The main character is big on self-pity which got annoying very quickly, and the main male character isn't particularly likeable either. The narrator wasn't great. Her voice is quite monotone, and she doesn't put much expression into her reading.
Overall this was a something of nothing book. I might get the next one to see if the story or characters improve, but I won't hold my breath.
I'd recommend the story, but not this recording
Recording was tinny throughout & ruined the enjoyment of the story. The voice she used for Ellie sounded bored throughout.
"rough start, awesome finish"
The beginning could of been stronger.
That it actually turned out good. I about gave up in the beginning because it seem like a young reader kind of book.
This book starts off seeming like a young teen read and grows into something way more than that. Stick with the book through the rough start because it gets much better. At times this book is heavy on the foal language. The story is actually pretty decent about to start the second book.
"wow. I wasn't not expecting this to be good."
I loved it. I first downloaded this book thinking it would be a good book to keep me entertained while I wait at the doctors office or before bed...but I was hooked! It had a few cheese moments but it's very fast moving. I couldn't put it down.
"A strange mix of heavy romance + magical realism"
Great for an Audible semi-attentive listen but I can tell I would have enjoyed the actual read FAR less. Not having the time to linger on the would-be annoying repetitive descriptions and reminders of prior story details that were unnecessary. Not to mention the off-puttingly annoying appearance of the, "IDIOT! YOU NEVER RUN UPSTAIRS TO GET AWAY FROM THE KILLER IN A HORROR MOVIE" quality of stupidity scene when the protagonist opens the door to a scary sound after being adamantly warned NOT to open it FOR ANYONE OR ANY REASON.
I DO have to say that the quality of descriptions and action and emotion was *mostly* fresh with only an occasional fit of, "okay, how many spine tingles or stomach churns are we going to have here...?" and at least the sex scenes weren't TOTALLY absurd or lewd, though it did seem very stark how it was almost like an entire, specific, 1/8 of the novel was force-dedicated to servicing the stale sex lives of middle aged women. (I've frankly reached an age that I just find that almost sad and forced in most fiction anyway so maybe I'm just a jaded lit-snob who prefers more story than sex scenes.)
All in all, thanks to some of the best voice acting in reading I've come across yet in an Audible of any of my Kindle books, not to mention the ironically very nicely priced (read: low) of the Audible for the quality, I do at least plan to finish this book series while I piddle about around the house.
"Loved the plot!"
I felt like a lot of the curse words were unnecessary. To me, it took interest away from the story.
"this was an awful story for me. it was so boring."
I didn't like anything about it. it kept me hanging just enough to want to see what happens in the end til I got a past half way. then I just went to the last chapter and tag the ending. wish I would've done it earlier.
loved it...good basis. haven't read a lot about the subject of the Roanoke colony. but this book makes me interested.
The story was very good and the preformance was great but way too many f _ _ _ s inserted. Would have been much better with out it.
"loved this book"
I've listened to around a hundred books some were so bad I couldn't finish, others were good, them there were the ones like this one that I just loved and couldn't wait to get the next one. I hope the next one is as good or better
I love the story but since I'm from the north, the NC accent kinda through me for many parts of the book but it definitely fit the characters . Love the story line though. I'm starting the second book now.
"Cliffhanger not worth persuing."
I had higher hopes for this book, the storyline sounded intriguing. I am a fan of ancient curses of all cultures, so I was excited about this book. I was enjoying this book up to about 4 hours into the story and it took a turn that wasn't to my liking. I wasn't a huge fan of Collin to start off with but as the story progressed I started to loath him, even when Elle like him I still didn't. The romance was very juvenile. I went ahead and read what the next books were about and needless to say I will not be continuing on after this series. I am not a fan of love triangles, I believe they have to be written with some delicacy otherwise they don't work. I don't believe I will like this triangle at all so this is the end for me. I was not a fan of the narrator, she had a tint of tinniest that was a bit annoying. After a while though I didn't notice quite as much.
